Yeah so I hear. I haven't tried windows 8 since the beta though lol

Just cuz I don't really need windows for anything these days though. 8.1 sounds like a good OS now.

Ah, it's actually 8.1 I use, but didn't know the distinction was being made.

It is the "different" UI that annoys me, even though my laptop is a touchscreen one and Win8 is meant to be part of that, I just cannot be bothered. I want to use it like I used Win7 or XP.

Apart from that it does seem to have not had too many problems (in my experience) and does perform quite well, especially coming out of sleep/folded up mode, but then it was coded to do that...

You really shouldn't have to deal with metro at all outside of the start screen in 8.1 I guess.

Yeah you shouldn't have too. I have mine setup to boot straight to the desktop like Windows 7. Then when I hit start I view my program list like you would in 7, just different looks. No dumb tiles or anything. Plus with 8.1 you can fully customize the UI to your liking. It takes some tinkering to get it right, but once you do its like a better version of 7. I have the preview of Windows 10 installed on a Hyper-V machine. Its basically 8.1 built to look more inline with 7. Some new features for sure, but it would have normally been an update. They are just re-branding after all the hate for 8 vanilla.

Its the closest where gonna get to windows 98 for modarn computing.
And with updates now out the window we can now finally use is as a proper lightweight MS OS.

While on the subject of XP
Why on earth do the automated tills at tesco (well, everywhere now) run on it?
Half the time when I pass the tills they are not in operation and you can just see the XP desktop and a few "failed to start bat" errors on them :P
I don't know much about the operation of those tills but it seems far to easy to find a way to access them and id imagine it would be a simple case of finding out how the change system works and getting the machine to dispense its contents.
For all I know they could be running on some sort of big VM mainframe but saying that it isnt the fun it used to be.

Shit like that is almost always running older OS' I think. Probably not really worth it to upgrade them.

I know that but running an anything part of a major EPOS system on bog standard windows XP IVE CHECKED ITS NOT EVEN THE BUISNESS EDITION ITS YOUR BOG STANDARD NON UPDATABLE WINDOWS XP!

It just sounds like its asking for it!
Even if its not a risk it seems like a very unprofessional IT solution for major retailers to be using.
Would it not be better to have these tills run a dedicated very stripped down UNIX based OS?
Prehaps they know something I don't!

I use 7 on my laptops but 8.1 on my main desktop. to be honest 8.1 is very much more stabilized when configured. i still don't understand why i feel like i'm the only one that hasn't had not one issue since i got 8.1 at all.
