GIMP is as capable as Photshop. The difference lies not in the possibilities, but in the interface. GIMP's interface sucks ass and is totally unintuitive. Photshop makes things easier while GIMP makes things harder. All that money people pay for Photshop (those who do pay, lol) goes to making it look pretty and be more streamlined. Yes, PS' interface is huge, but that's because they've streamlined a lot of things that you have to do with "tricks" in GIMP.
Overall, if you're rich or if you simply don't mind pirating, then PS is a better choice. But if you're poor and don't want to pirate stuff, then GIMP gives you the power to do the same things PS can do, albeit with worse tools to harness that power.
