This is my favourite book.
Quite simply a few short episodes about spatial exploration in suburban Japan. It tastes so much of Shenmue, it feels almost like an extension. To the point that it made me think of Suzuki (a man from the same generation as Taniguchi), as sharing some of his traits, namely the pursuit of realism with the very ponderate use of fantasy elements.

The story is set on a caravan that is travellng through a desert in search of Oasis City with its abundant supplies of water. A trader named Lyra travels with the caravan despite the thieves that bedevil it. One day, a mysterious boy named Aladdin appears before Lyra, and their encounter opens a door for adventure.

Since I made a promise not to do anything to Zimings topics. This one has been very inactive.Ziming would you allow me to un sticky this however at the bottom of the topic you can subscribe to it so you don't have to sift though pages to find it if it get's buried. If you say no I respect that. Also saying this here instead of as PM as it actually might get a couple people to get it active again as a bump. Let me know :)

I absolutely recommend Hajime no Ippo

It's a Manga about boxing which might sound dull if you're not into boxing but it's actually one of the best mangas I've ever read. There is also an Anime which you should be able to find online :)

A real gritty and raw manga with a wild west theme. Not for kiddies.

I'll recommend Marmalade Boy. Its the only Shoujo I have on my shelf, but its one of my favorite manga.

Its about a girl, Miki, who's parents one day cheerfully announce they will be getting divorced. Not only that but they both already have new partners who they met on vacation. Their new partners are of course another married couple who couldn't be happier to participate in this game of wife swap. The two families decide to move in together in one big house so as not to complicate things too much for their kids(the other family has a son Miki's age). Lots of hilarity and high school drama ensues. And of course there's the obligatory will Miki fall in love with her new ikemen "sibling" romance plot line.

There's also an anime version but I've only seen a couple episodes so I'm not sure if it's as good as the manga.

Anything by Junji Ito, the horror master, up there with Lovecraft in my mind and heart.

Among my favourites of him:

Uzumaki:

Gyo:

The Tomie series:

But, in all honesty, he is a horror genius. Anything by him is outlandish and outstanding.

Anyone here read Solanin? I'd thoroughly recommend it, it's one of my favourite manga. It's a slice of life type of story about a group of friends at that awkward stage in life where they've long since finished with the education system but don't feel like they've found their place in the "real world" yet. It's top notch.

I also really want to check out Nana, but I might just watch the anime instead.

I would suggest the manga over the anime. I devouered the manga volume after volume. The anime is good but streamlined a bit too much, or at least I get that vibe.
