What are some good live action movies from Japan? Mostly, I've watched horror movies and I'm looking for something a little different.

タイヨウのうた　Taiyou no Uta ( The sun's song: Alt Title: A song to the Sun. Alt title: Midnight Sun)
うさぎドロップ Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop)
and
君に届け Kimi ni Todoke (Reaching You: Alt title: From Me To You)

which were all okay... with Kimi ni Todoke being the best, I think.

Anyway what are some good Japanese movies that are not anime adaptations?

Namely Love Exposure, Strange Circus, Hair Extensions, Guilty of Romance and Cold Fish.
He is, by far, one of my favourite cinema authors.

Love Exposure looks interesting. Hmm.

^How could a movie about a guy obcessed with panty shots be anything but interesting?

時をかかる彼女 - Toki wo Kakeru kanojo　A girl drinks some time traveling serum meaning to fullfil her mothers wish and deliver a letter to an old friend.

タイヨウのうた - Taiyou no Uta　- It's based on a (semi) true story. It's about Kaoru Amane who suffers from Xeroderma Pigmentosum (sunlight is dangerous to her) and plays music near the train station at night. It's a romanc emovie.

うさぎドロップ- Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop) - It's about a guy who takes in the illegitimate child of his father, whilst the other members of her family want to sent her away.

君に届け- Kimi ni Todoke - Another romance movie. It's about a girl who has a strange name and is the victim of being rumored to be bad luck and weird. She meets a guy who is actually nice to her and then some friends. It's based on an anime of the same name.

ポルノスター Pornosutaa (Porno Star) (or Tokyo Rampage in the US) - A Yakuza who likes trouble and slaying Gaijin and stealing their drugs.

I'm looking for something like インストル　(Install) which, I can't watch for monetary reasons. Also can find no ddls.

Slice of Life and Coming of Age movies are what I'm interested in right now.

So, any movies that aren't over the top?

Well, maybe you could be more specific rather than just anything that isn't horror? Do you want classic movies? Yakuza movies? Science fiction, comedy, drama?

Off the top of my head I can recommend モテキ(moteki). Its about a guy in his twenties who some might call a loser. No girlfriend, crappy job etc. Well one day that turns around and he enters his "moteki". The period when one suddenly becomes popular with the opposite sex. Its a romantic comedy that's heavy on the laughs for the first half. It was really successful in Japan and made the female lead, Nagasawa Masami, a big star in Japan. Very "hip" movie with one of the best soundtracks you can get.

Coming of Age, Drama, Romance... Daily Life.

Sukiyaki Western Django - If you like over the top action movies. It's a little weird to watch cause all the actors speak english and it's clear it's not their first language, but otherwise has some fun stuff in there.

The Returner - It's very derivative of popular Hollywood movies like Terminator, ET, and Mission Impossible but it's a very cool movie still. Takeshi Kaneshiro and Anne Suzuki are wonderful here.

Last Life in the Universe - This is a Thai film but it's still good. It's a drama about a suicidal guy and a fucked up girl....that's as much as I can remember from it at the top of my head.

Kikujiro - You might've seen this one. It's about an older man who goes on a journey to reunite a boy with his mother.

If you're willing to use torrent I can hook you up with a link for a private tracker where I get a lot of J-movies/dramas that has the movie you mentioned(Install). It has one of my favorite actresses so I'm downloading it now . PM me if you want the site cuz I don't think trading this kind of information openly is exactly kosher.
