I've been bumping that album hardcore since it came out last month. Takao Tajima is my idol.

Here's some idol goodness written and arranged by the man himself.

So I posted this band when they first appeared a little ways back, saying hopefully they'd continue to impress me, and not be just another band with one good song at the beginning and just a bunch of filler thereafter (the visual kei scene tends to hold a lot of those for me).
Well, they've put out a number of songs now, and I've loved every single one. They're actually living up to the excitement I felt when I first heard them, and I couldn't be happier about that.

I love how non-repetitive they are. So many bands are content to just repeat the same stuff two or three times and call it a song. But in this case, aside from the obvious chorus, every part of the song is different; in particular, I love that the vocals start out as hard and heavy as can be, but turn soft for the duration of the second half.
Very talented band so far, with a shit-ton more personality and presence than most others on the scene these days. As it is now, I'll buy anything they announce.
Which turns out to be the only real problem; apparently they're still "small" enough that their stuff isn't exactly the wide-release variety. Their first EP was only distributed at live shows (so it was obviously out of my reach). This particular single was orderable on CDJapan, so I managed to get it (and it included a DVD with some live footage, so that was pretty cool), but I'm worried that their next works might not be on there. They have another single and a full album announced, but there's no telling whether I'll have the opportunity to actually buy them. Just gotta keep an eye out, I guess.

LOL I had no idea that album dropped until just yesterday when I found the title track on youtube. Pretty amazing album that goes back to the OL roots of old.

Yeah it's really good. I read somewhere online that he reunited with the rhythm section that played on some of the earlier Original Love albums to record the title track.

Am I the only one regularly listening to the soundtrack of Shogun Total War? -)

My wife used to say it was more Japanese than some of the Japan made music. -)

Pretty underrated band from the 70s in my opinion.

That's interesting. If you didn't tell me I wouldn't have guessed they were Japanese. You could have easily fooled me into believing it was a British band trying to imitate their more popular contemporaries like Sabbath or Cream or something in that realm. Cool find.

This isn't really Japanese music but I have been fascinated with Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan. He is, quite simply, one of the foremost Bach and ancient music specialists in the world. The baroque style isn't exactly the most popular in the world, and it's of mostly religious inspiration. Although Suzuki-san grew up in a Christian home (a rarity in Japan), that he'd become one of the top experts of a style of music that has nothing to do with his homecountry is spectacular. Plus his Bach Collegium Japan, an orchestra and choral group mostly comprised of Japanese people sing in German or Latin. Suzuki has been known to translate the original texts so his singers understand the meaning of what they're singing. That they can sing it with so much passion even though they didn't grow up in a judaeo-christian culture and society is amazing.
They've already recorded all of Bach's cantatas in a mind boggling 55 records, plus Suzuki himself is a virtuoso harpsichordist and organist (I can't imagine how hard it must have been to try and learn these instruments in Japan - there can't be that many available), and is also in the process of recording all of Bach's keyboard works as well.

The Gazette finally put out a new album; first new stuff they've released in a little over two years, which is a long time for them to go without a new release.
Their sound has matured, that's for sure. The whole album is darker than anything they've done before, but it also feels much more unified in tone than their albums usually do (oftentimes they're pretty diverse in styles and all). Usually I'm a pretty big fan of bands tackling a variety of styles, but it's nice to hear some serious cohesion for once. Makes the whole album feel like a full experience, rather than just a series of unrelated ditties.
I think this song is battling to be my personal favorite on the CD. Not quite as heavy as some of the other songs, but it's got a really nice groove to it.
(oh, and disregard the 6-minute runtime; song's only around 3, but the uploader made their videos overlong for some reason)

Japanese Hip Hop great DJ DECKSTREAM passed away recently. His beats were always bright and optimistic which makes this even more sad.

Rest in peace.

I've been creaming my pants over this song all weekend. The arrangement, the production, the swedishness, the nostalgia, those freaking horns. It's so exhilarating diving into new genres and getting to experience their masterpieces as though they just were released.
