I haven't preordered the upcoming album this is on yet, partly because it's a compilation of old songs with only a few new, and I already have a number of them, and partly because the limited edition (which is usually what I opt for with this stuff) is about 80 bucks; kind of a big chunk of change.
But gahdang, this pushed me a little further toward ordering it anyway. Always a good band, and they're just getting better.

Been listening to Godiego for many years now. They did music for the 1977 movie Hausu, the Galaxy Express 999 movie, and the 70s TV show about Sun Wukong called Monkey.

I have no idea what this is, since I found it by clicking on endless streams of "recommended" on youtube, but I thought this was pretty great -- performance and music both.

I'd say that it's probably a fairly well known song. Even my dumbass Japanese friends who don't really like music have heard of it. It's called Cosmos by the way.

Ue o Muite Arukō by Kyu Sakamoto.
This is a relatively famous song. It was renamed Sukiyaki in the US. Doesn't have anything to do with the song (it's actually the name of a Japanese dish) but it was catchier and easier to pronounce for baka gaijins.

Was reading an old interview with Kaoru (one of my favorite guitarists) from the band Dir en Grey, and the interviewer asked about what other Japanese bands he listens to. He named this band, Downy.
Immediately checked them out, and golly dang... that's some good, atmospheric-as-hell stuff.

Listened to the other stuff on that channel too, and they seem to be very fond of unusual time signatures and whatnot. Very artistic and different. It's no wonder Kaoru listens to them, since Dir en Grey's stuff nowadays tends to be a bit unusual as well, mostly from a structural standpoint.
Love finding stuff like this. It's always oddly inspiring. Makes me feel like whatever music I do eventually come up with, there's no way for it to be technically "wrong," so long as it's expressive. That's the way of all art, I suppose. It's good to be reminded of that now and then.
