I might be moving to Tokyo.

(Discuss literally anything here including introductions)

I might be moving to Tokyo.

Postby shengoro86 » Wed Oct 21, 2015 3:48 pm

Hi all,

So my job might be relocating me to Tokyo (Still in talks).

Anyone here in the area? I'll be looking for people to help me get around and such.

A couple people from 500k are also on board to meet up when I get there.

I'm not sure where in Tokyo I will be but I'm excited.

I have a huge laundry list of stuff to do when I get there!

- See The Pillows in concert
- See Gackt in concert
- Visit Yokosuka
- Go to Dobuita Street
- Find a Japanese girlfriend (LOL)
- Visit the Kawasaki Kowloon Warehouse Arcade
- DDR on a Japanese arcade cabinet (drool)
- Visit YSNET

If anyone can be of help on terms of do and don'ts knowledge please let me know!

I can already speak a good amount of japanese, but I can't read Katakana or KAnji too well sadly.

Thanks!

Hi !

Good luck if you plan on living in Japan. It's not that easy but is a great experience.

Things to remember :

- Stand on the left side of the escalator (walking is actually the right side, in Tokyo atleast)
- Avoir shaking hands (unless you're good friends with that person, but that's my opinion)
- Don’t stick your chopsticks up in your rice
- Do not ride the 女性専用車両 (Women-only passenger car) on scheduled time. You're a foreigner they will probably forgive you but I'd avoid doing it
- Keep in mind that Japanese people can say something and are thinking the exact opposite thing. That's what we call "Honne and tatemae". It's a bit more complex than that so I'd suggest that you to read this :

http://blog.gaijinpot.com/honne-tatemae/

That's all I have right now without thinking too much. If something else comes up, I'll let you know. ;-)

The Warehouse arcade you mentioned is pretty cool.
I live 10 minutes from it :D I've only been once though.
I used to think Japan was OMFG AWESOME, but after years and years, the gloss wears off.
Still, it's easy to find jobs, and I make more than my college friends who stayed back home. Easy to get girls as well, you don't even need to do anything, you're guaranteed that a hot girl will make a pass at you sooner rather than later.
Overall it's an ok place to live.

James! Really? Very nice..

Well I'm in Kyushu so not easy for us to meet up right away but flights to Tokyo for me are only around $100 so ill come up sometime and we can go to dobuita or something.
Actually in the 4 years I've lived in Japan, I still have never been. Yama is going to come out here aswell sometime and we talked about doing that. Maybe we could make a thing out of it.
Also if you'd like to come down to Fukuoka sometime id love to show you around and hang out.
Good luck with the transfer.

So, I mentioned that finding work is super easy (it's the main reason I'm still here after 8 years), but obviously, that doesn't apply to you since you're moving for your existing job.
So... out of curiosity, if I may ask, what's your job?

Thanks! Let's meet up at the arcade sometime!

:) My position is Chief Security Officer. However, I am a Linux Systems Network Engineer and White-Hat Hacker :) I am very well versed in networking and protocol exploiting. Hence why I love doing Shenmue mods :)

Hah, sounds like an awesome and high-paying job :D
You would definitely enjoy Japan, although some things get on the nerves after a while, it's still a fun place to live in. I've only rarely been very far outside of Tokyo, but I imagine that for those who travel a lot, there must be tons of stuff to do as well.
And Yokosuka is, of course, a must for anyone who likes Shenmue :D there isn't much to do there, but as a Shenmue fan, it's cool to just wander around. I haven't been since 2008, so I was thinking of going sometime this winter. I wonder if it has changed..

Nice man. Japan is amazing. Went there a few months ago.

I should be going again next year. I'll definitely holla at you if I pass by Tokyo.

I was just looking at vacation prices to tokyo and okinawa around my birthday in april (just for entertaining the thought mind you). it would be at least $2500 just for flight and hotel, so that wont be happening for a while :/

Now I know who to reach out to next time I intend to visit.

This is good advice.
