How were these movies PG during the 70's and 80's

Ever noticed there were a lot of salty language, sexual innuendo and drug references in a lot of these movies? Indiana Jones along with Gremlins is why we have the PG-13 rating.

Original rated R robocop is better than the newer pg-13 robocop.
