Police have confirmed a "number of fatalities" following reports of an explosion at Manchester Arena.

Witnesses reported hearing a "huge bang" following an Ariana Grande gig at Manchester Arena.

Network Rail said train lines out of Manchester Victoria station, which is close to the concert venue, were blocked.

Greater Manchester Police tweeted to urge people to stay away from the area.
'Screaming and running'

A number of eyewitnesses have described the confusion in the aftermath.

Robert Tempkin, 22, from Middlesbrough, said: "Everyone was screaming and running, there were coats and people's phones on the floor. People just dropped everything.

"Some people were screaming they'd seen blood but other people were saying it was balloons busting or a speaker had been popped.

"There were lots of ambulances. I saw somebody being treated. I couldn't tell what had happened to him."

Josh Elliott, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, said he was shocked by news of the fatalities.

"A bang went off and everyone stopped and screamed... we basically hit the deck," he said

"It was bedlam… it was horrific.

"We got up when we thought it was safe and got out as quickly as possible.

"People were just crying and in tears... police cars were everywhere.

"We just wanted to get out as quickly as possible because we didn't know what was going on.

I'm not even shocked anymore, it's like this is just routine in Europe now.

Nowhere is safe anymore, it's disgusting.

I know the odds are slim, but seeing as how there are a lot of people on here that could be from the area, I'd like to know everyone is ok.

That's not true at all. When was the last time Japan, Switzerland, or Poland (to name a few) experienced an Islamic terror attack?

Australia, Canada and Brazil are good to go for sure (been living in two of them within these few years), which among the population are huge numbers of people of Arab ethnicity.

Though I really gotta say, this attack hit a really new low as they were willing to attack basically a kid's concert.

Armed police and media from around the world were all over the centre today. Took over 3 hours to get into work this morning. Very downbeat feeling due to how many kids ended up dying. I feel so sorry for those parents who didn't (and some who still don't) know what happened to their loved ones.

It really rustles my feathers when they fucking go "yeah, we were aware of that guy", and after the attack happens they mount a whole theater for nothing.

UK terror threat level has now been raised to critical (for the first time over here since 2007?) That means they're aware of another attack that may very well happen.

Well there is always an attack being planned at any given time, I guess after this they no longer want to take chances so have raised the threat level to a level that allows them to deploy the army as extra security.

Absolutely sickened that this has happened in my city, I'm aware it's a worldwide problem but when it happens literally on my doorstep it makes you realise how lucky I am to be safe right now. Manchester will prevail, our people have shown amazing support and love for one another and I can't begin to imagine what the families of the victims are going through, I mean it was a concert consisting mainly of CHILDREN for goodness sake. Heartless and cowardice, my prayers are with the families. Shocking...
