US Shenmue

Postby GamesMaster » Mon Jun 07, 2004 1:52 pm

Hi guys
What a present to come home from work to, a copy of US Shenmue fresh from Hong Kong sitting on the kitchen table, I wasn't expecting it so soon :D

But alas all is not well, I'm having some trouble getting the game to display on the screen properly :? The original Japanese version of Shenmue 1 works a treat no problem but US Shenmue appears a quarter of the way down the screen, making it unplayable :?
I'm in the UK and using GameShark CDX (tried Utopia doesn't work at all) to load the game. I'd be the first to say it's trouble with it being a NTSC J game and me using a PAL TV (it is capable of 60Hz) but why then does the original Japanese Shenmue work? I bought it thinking there would be no trouble as I had none with the other.

Anyway I love the US Shenmue box esp. love the pictures underneath the discs :D It's great trading in US $ with the GBP £ being so strong it means I can get some right bargains, the game was $44 which is about £23 BARGAIN! :D

Thanks for any help

Best Wishes
GM

I couldn't get the game to work with Utopia, so I can't play it.

Your problem is probably PAL. It's an NTSC game. Maybe the other version of Shenmue was designed to compensate, but US Shenmue clearly isn't.

Just a quick update for anyone who ends up in the same situation as me, you can remedy the problem with a DC - VGA lead, I picked one up for about £6 on ebay. US Shenmue now works a treat full screen on my PC monitor looking sharper and brighter than ever before :D

I couldn't get the game to work with Utopia, so I can't play it.

Use something along the lines of GameShark CDX you can download that one for free on the net now or buy DC-X, lik-sang.com sell them.

One tiny question:

What's the difference between the normal Japanese Shenmue and US Shenmue?

How did you get it to play on a NTSC U Dreamcast?

I didn't, I got it to play on a PAL Dreamcast :D But the process should be the same, I downloaded the free version of GameShark CDX for Dreamcast, it's a cheat CD that lets you play imported games:
http://www.megagames.com/dc/dc_utils_bootcd.shtml
then burnt it to a CD using Alcohol 120% burning rom (or you can buy DCX from lik-sang if you can't burn CD's). And hey presto it works. But it wouldn't display correctly on my PAL TV so I have to play it on my PC monitor using a DC - VGA cable....simple uh?

errr.....that seems unlikely. i use ntsc, ntsc-j , and pal games all on 1 VMU an nothing happens to me.
i dunno. but i always back up my saves with another vmu. its good to have 2 vmu's just in case.
