US Shenmue

Does anyone know anything about this rare version of Shenmue?

It was released on the Dreamcast in Japan, and it contained US and Japanese dialogue as far as I am aware.

What I really want to know though is whether or not you can play the game in Japanese with English subtitles, because that would be awesome.

As far as I'm aware, no version of Shenmue 1 exists that has Japanese voices and English subtitles =(

Yep, it sucks =(
I hope Shenmue 3 gives you the choice of Japanese or English voices, the situation with S1 and 2's voices is ridiculous.

Then why in US Shenmue's official website (through Shenmue.com) it has it in Japanese.

I believe this is what you're referring to. It's a reimport of the US version: English voices with English or Japanese subtitles.

I don't get what so many people in the US and Europe like so much about japanese voiceovers in the first place. I mean, true the english voiceovers suck, but surely they suck even more if you have to read the subtitles anyway, making voices pointless! And yeah, US shenmue, from what I've read (admitedly through babelfish), was made because shenmue was popular with a wide audience in japan, and they thought this would be a great way to teach the kids how to speak english. I'm guessing it works, because thanks to shenmue 2DC, I can annoy my friends with tiny amounts of japanese!

Well I don't notice, I read fast, and I am used to reading subtitles because I watch heaps of foreign films and anime.

Shenmue has surprisingly good voice acting if you turn off the subtitles in Shenmue I.

I no longer laugh at it while playing! :D

Do you think it would be possible to hack a Japanese iso of the game, replacing the Japanese subtitle files with the US/Pal ones?

Why would anyone want to do that??? If you played it a few times you won´t need any subs anyway...
