If there was an option that said "Know of Madame Butterfly from Shenmue, but what the fuck is the madame butterfly opera?" , I would click that option.

Is it really that hard to understand it's an opera and Shenmue made a reference to it?
Just wanted to know if you knew about the opera before shenmue or not. Not hard.

Lol the only time I ever heard that phrase was when I played Shenmue. I always wondered what he was referring to, hence the cheeky comment. I didn't know the antique store guy was referencing an opera since I never had the urge to look it up.

Already aware of it and despite its best effort Shenmue had no effect on my 19th century opera viewing habits.

One of the most magical parts of Shenmue. Thanks for bringing it up, Ryu. Made my birthday.

Just a few days ago I played through this part of the game, and though I read about it years ago on these forums, I had forgotten what Oishi was referring to with the Madam Butterfly comment. Of course, I also forgot to look into it, so I'm really glad you posted this, Ryudo. Though, I'm not sure why we are being polled on our opera knowledge
