Suzuki's biggest blunders in Shenmue

Postby SMDzero » Sat Jun 18, 2016 2:55 am

Don't post something that is intrinsically a part of the experience (like having to wait in Shenmue 1 or any kind of QTEs, etc)

I'd say honestly it was having the moves displayed F*CKING SIDEWAYS in Shenmue 1!!!!

What was Suzuki thinking when he felt you should have to crank your damn neck just to read the moves????

The interface can be a mess at multiple times. Typical from AM2 I would say. And I agree with you, the moves screen is a pain since the menu does not remember the last move you checked (scrolling fest)

The fact that you cannot buy multiple items at once in the tomato store gives another awkward result in the game.

Pure speculation but I would imagine the layout of the moves screen was designed for Japanese text reading from top to bottom, so rotating the English instructions to fit those constraints was a time saving measure to avoid redesigning the whole screen.

Not saying it wasn't the lazy option, but it would at least explain the logic behind it.

Not making a game good enough to sell enough copies to make a profit.

Too bad almost everyone who had a dreamcast bought this game, the dreamcasts poor sells is what failed shenmue to turn up a profit. If this would've been a ps2 game we would've seen Shenmue 4 way back in the day and would never get to enjoy Shenmue 3 on the ps4 .

SO THANK GOD IT FAILED.

Here's another one: the terrible 2d low resolution sky in Shenmue 1! EVERY TIME you move the camera the sky does not move correctly relative to the background... a total blunder graphics-wise. Why did Suzuki miss this obvious graphical detail when the rest of the game was so great looking? I mean even Zelda 64 had a 3d skybox!

Submitting that kind of comment on a Shenmue forum is obviously just for baiting and nothing more.

You stated Shenmue wasn't a good enough game to turn a profit. It's clear it had nothing to do with the game itself being poor, but just the sign of the times. The Dreamcast was dying a slow enough death and that's basically the reason Shenmue did so poorly in sales. I cannot honestly believe you think Shenmue is a poor quality game.
