Must've gotten hungry on the way to Hong Kong.

That explains why he couldn't catch the guys when they stole his bag. He gained a few pounds. It all makes sense.

Especially since he bought merchandise! I wouldn't let go of such stuff either.

It's sad that they don't stay in Ryo's inventory for Shenmue II. It could've led to some hilarious situations.

Ryo: Hey, um, odd stranger girl from the wildest depths of China.
Shenhua: What?
Ryo: Even though I've never seen you before, you look familiar.
Shenhua: How comes? You aren't thinking about kittens, are you?
Ryo: No, I... I have this bag of potato chips from Japan. And there's a picture of you on it.
Shenhua: No way, let me see that! *grabs the bag, looks at it with a totally puzzled face*
Ryo: See? It's a perfect match. Here, I have chocolate and caramel bars with the same picture of you too.
Shenhua: ...
Ryo: In fact, I have dozens of these in my backpack.
Shenhua: Um... Excuse me but I gotta get at least a country distance between us again. You're giving me the creeps.

Well, II does have Tomato and the same weird Shenhua memorabilia.

What Shenhua memorabilia do you mean? In Shenmue II the chips, chocolate and caramel all have a different design. It's more generic looking with just a basic Shenmue writing on them. The same is true for the winning cans.
No Shenhua on there either.

Haven't read all the posts yet so if this was mentioned already then I'm sorry.

However, we can all say that the biggest blunder in Shenmue 1 is that the Kitchen Door in the Hazuki Residence does not match with the door shown outside. Nor is that door connected to anything :X

Hmmm, maybe you're right. It's been a while.

This is what the Tomato Mart in Wan Chai has in store. The General Store has the same stuff.

One more thing I'd like to mention for the topic are the stiff bodys of NPCs at times. The way they twist their necks to painful angles instead of just turning around. Also how the body animation freezes the moment you speak to them, like the woman at Ajiichi, holding her knife.

Nothing terrible but one of the things, that show the age of the game. They could've easily improved on this with a few more animation routines.

No wonder why Yamagashi-san's back kept hurting!

Different strokes for different folks.

That's a coprophilia joke, BTW.

Looks like a girls magazine about pop singers. But judge for yourself.

It would've been funny if Ryo found his father's hidden stash of Poo magazines in the basement.

It would be anti-climactic to have Ryo kill Lan Di while he is sitting on the can reading Poo magazine.
