What if Ryo died instead of Iwao?

What if Ryo died instead of Iwao?

Postby Virtua Soldier » Sat Jul 02, 2016 10:29 am

Forgive me if this topic has been posted already, but how different would Shenmue be if the roles of Ryo and Iwao were reversed? What if Ryo was killed by Lan Di and Iwao was left to avenge his death? Story wise, would the game remain the same?

No, the whole point of the story is that it's a young man's journey toward manhood and self discovery.

Besides avenging the death of your child is a closed journey; there is no room for growth.

Shenmue isn't a story about revenge at all; its a story of personal growth ; Ryo won't even care about revenge anymore by the end of this.

If your child was killed no way could you let the feelings of revenge go like Ryo will.

Lan Di was there to kill Iwao, not Ryo, for a very specific reason: enact vengeance upon the person who allegedly killed the former's father. (Plus, it's locked down in the prophecy exactly what is fated to happen.) It wouldn't matter if he killed Ryo, too, because he would have killed Iwao anyway, and then there wouldn't have been a game.

It would have been a really short game.

I can see it now! After a week of investigating, Fuku-san learns that he may be able to find information on Chinese criminals at the Heart Beats Bar. On his way there, he has to walk through an alley and runs into two large, drunk guys that look like sailors. As he attempts to go around the first one, he's intentionally blocked by the man. "Go home!" yells the seaman. Fuku-san shifts his weight, clenches his fists, looks the man in the eye, and replies, "okay," before turning around and heading back to the dojo. He needed a few more years to practice his Pit Blow anyway.

He needed a few more years to practice his Pit Blow anyway.

Seeing as Fuku-san is fully aware he can't fight to save his life, it occurs to him he'll need to think outside the box in order to infiltrate the dreaded sailor-infested Heartbeats Bar. After staring at the cherry blossom tree for a few minutes, it hits him (an idea, not a stray branch); with a huge, proud grin on his face, he smashes open his piggy bank (quickly realising he could have just popped open the plug at the base, but it doesn't matter any more), gathers up his life savings, heads down to the Tomato Mart, and empties their stock of chocolate bars, granting him access to three-hundred-and-ninety-six attempts of the raffle.

As he's approaching the final five attempts - beads of sweat from a combination of the pressure and weight of the carrier bags full of runner-up prizes he's won running down his little face - with the light of hope drawing dimmer than his sensei's last breaths, it happens: he wins the motherfucking first prize! But there is simply no time for celebration; it's time to infiltrate that bar! Mustering up the very last of his strength, Fuku-san demands the boom box right then and there, grabs a cassette tape, and hightails it outta there! Descending the puke-stained steps of uncertainty, Fuku-san, taking a deep breath, places the boom box outside the door of the bar, inserts the tape, and...

This.

Infact, I bet by the end of Shenmue 3, It's no longer going to be about revenge at all.

In the Shenmue story, the revenge thing only exists as a initial reason for Ryo to start out on a Journey. Hell even by the end of Shenmue 2, It's definitely not something he's still gunho about.

^ Exactly.

Besides, Yu himself confirmed in a couple of past interviews for ShenmueMaster that the feeling of revenge will completely disappear and that Shenmue is indeed a journey of discovery.
