According to a reverse image search, this is a demonstration from an event called Digitaliland, which was held in Tokyo in 1999.

Shenmue Master covered the event, so everything you're looking for (including a good number of similar pictures) can be found here: Shenmue Master Digitaliland

The article states the screenshots were taken from a video. I wonder if said video exists anywhere on the internet :-k

I haven't been able to find the original video, but there is this Japanese transcript of the Shenmue-related section available, made by a Japanese fan. The video was an NHK TV broadcast:
From May 1st-3rd 1999, an event called 'Network Jungle 2 - Digitaliland' was held at the Tokyo Big Site, bringing together the latest on network technology and digital devices.

This program was a digest of the contents of that event, broadcast by NHK.

If there is interest in this I could look at doing a translation.

A translation would be excellent! Hopefully this thread will gain traction and others will show an interest, too :)

I was always curious about this event especially at it seems that so much effort was put into it. I would really appreciate a translation of the japanese article, thanks Switch.

the set of the exhibition seems to be trying to replicate ruins (Kowloon?, or Bailu's castle walls) and forests (Guilin?). interesting that they recreated the whole exhibition digitally. i'm assuming that there was a playable demo where it was possible to walk around the digital version of the exhibition as Ryo.

i wonder if Suzuki still has the half size Shenhua doll, and other smaller figurines? There is lots of cool things there, but Sega has probably lost it all by now. Shenmue collectors would pay a fortune to get their hands on that stuff.
