Which character deserve a spin-off game and How would it be?

Postby celsowm » Sat Jan 28, 2017 12:48 pm

Hi guys !
Today I was imagining a kind of spin-off Shenmue game with Ren of Heaveans. I imagine a more linear adventure game with Ren searching some ancient chinese treasures (Shenmue Uncharted?!?)

And how about you guys, Which character deserve a spin-off game and How would it be?

Tom. But it would just have him selling hot dogs and buying supplies for them.

Goro's Groundhog Day; a game in which everyone's favourite denim-clad greaser wannabe starts off his day with a boiled egg. However, it's a bad egg, but only upon reaching the harbour for his daily loiter do the effects begin to take hold. There isn't a bus in sight, a vacant corner away from prying eyes, and he certainly won't make it home without making an omelette in his underwear, so he assumes his infamous "Must-a had me a bad egg this mornin'!" pose and ventures forth in search of a toilet.

In what can only be described as a combination of keeping your balance in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and the book airing sections of Shenmue II, players must guide the coiffured waddler to the nearest toilet (of which there are eight possible locations, picked at random each day), making sure to avoid forklifts, Mad Angels, sailors, and security guards in order to get the poor sod there as quickly as possible while, at the same time, not overexerting him. Keeping an eye on the 'Expulsion' metre, and an eye out for power-ups, is essential for success.

Rinse and repeat.

A lot of characters come to mind. First of all Xiuying of course, but also Iwao, Ren, Lan Di or Guizhang could work for a mini game.

Fantastic question OP!

I like @JohnDoom's suggestion a lot! More of Xiuying would be great!

Maybe this is the Yakuza 0 hype train talking, but I would love to see a prequel of sorts Shenmue 1, which would delve deeper into Ryo's personality and relationship with his friends prior to the day the snow that turned to rain. To keep it interesting as a game, maybe it could cut back and forth with a playable Lan Di covering the events that @southcarmain mentioned?

With it being a prequel and all, maybe this can be marketed to new players much like Yak0 did? Haha maybe we should all get together to create a pitch for SEGA xD

(I do think a 'Shenmue 0' could work using a medium other than games, like a TV series, animated or otherwise. I wish there were more 'published' Shenmue lore out there). Anyways, looking forward to tomorrows update!

Xiuying would be my top choice: possibilities are endless, from her as a kid, to her time training to become a master, to running the temple and beating up thugs, tons of things.

In terms of what makes most sense from a money-making standpoint, would be to do a mobile puzzle game/business sim as Tom, selling hotdogs: a new one gets a million DLs every week, so why not?

Great ideas in this thread though. I'll add a couple more:

- Tai-Chi with Jianmin and Guixiang
- pet raising simulator with the cat
- ShenHua's life in Bailu
- Joy checking up on all of the merchants in HK
- Running Five Stars Corporation as Zhu or Zhang

They could tackle many different options with this and genres for that matter. The two easiest is probably Ren and Gui Zhang. Gui is the bridge between 1-2-3 he could rehab, train, and fight the mad angels back home or lower rank members of the chi you. Ren could be tracking down Ryo exploring the countryside on horseback etc.

Definitely Iwao, hands down.

It would be perfect as a full length game, as a prequel. Everyone who plays must be curious about Iwao and what he did to get killed. Yes, it will probably be explained deeper in games to come, but I think it would fit well and could possible mirror Ryo's own journey as we've experienced it.

The game should give a bit of childhood information, sort of like Shenmue 1, and play as Iwao as a teen and his formative years; show the events that lead to him killing Sunming Zhao. It could show Ryo's mom, how Iwao fell in love with her, and how she died. Maybe even showing how Iwao was trying to cope as a single father and losing his wife.

There are so many possibilities with this concept. As well as Xiuying, but I don't see much promise in Tom's background, or Goro, or basically any other characters. Maybe Lan Di having his own game, but that is a stretch to me.

Reading all these makes me sad that Suzuki is getting old and the franchise is being so tested and is under scrutiny from the industry because these are some top ideas, especially marcrollins899's one about Iwao, I'd love that.

Well, to be fair, there is a lot of expectation for the game, not just because of its pedigree, but because of how much attention it was given, especially as a Kickstarter game that was revealed on-stage at E3. By that same token, however, the games media will look for any excuse to shit on anything that'll gain them some clicks and fire up a controversy, so it's probably best not to give what they say much stock.
