There always were ranks, they were the titles underneath your name. To help specify the order and value, the bars were added.

Rank determination: Posts, time spent online, activity, moderation status.

There is no way to boost other than cleanly participating.

At first I really didn't like the idea.... But it doesn't hurt anything and isn't such a bad idea when I think about it more.

Not the biggest fan of the green bars they look kinda ugly and out of place. I'd prefer the custom titles and post count myself.
