I'm more surprised to see almost 2000 backers in Spain.

Why so? It was one of the main markets where Shenmue was released, probably 7th or 8th in the world at the time. I only find surprising to have more Canadian backers, and only half of italian ones, despite having more population.

Well... Spain had a big impact with PSX and almost everybody was waiting for the PS2 when the Dreamcast came at the market. Most of my friends owned Sony consoles except a few that we owned Sega consoles.

USA leads by a massive margin, then UK as expected. While Japan is fourth, is anyone else disappointed at such low numbers for Japan compared to USA?

Something contributing to the numbers for the US and Canada will be that E3 was aimed at their time zones, so gamers from there will have been more likely to get caught up in the moment that helped break the world record for the fastest Kickstarter to reach $1 million. Most people elsewhere had to read about it the next day, which doesn't provide quite the same impetus unless you're a hardcore fan who's been waiting for this chance for years.

As for the gaming culture... I think it's like everywhere else in the World. It's also a matter of living standards.

My best childhood memories about gaming are from my holidays in Italy.
Arcades where I spent all my kid money in Out Run, Hang On, Shinobi, Wonder Boy, etc...
