It's a little early to tell, but yeah, I'm not sure if we should expect it to be quite on the same level/budget as the first two games...as long as it has everything that makes Shenmue Shenmue, however, then that's good enough for me. Just annoying that some of these stretch goals are so vague, as we don't have an idea of what the game will be like if they aren't met =/ I'm really really hoping it's not too linear, and that there is enough sidequests and extra things to do...I feel bad having these concerns, as a few short weeks ago we thought Shenmue III was never going to happen at all, but it'd be crushing to wait so long and for it to be a disappointment...

It’s Y. Suzuki’s pet franchise. The quality will be there in the finished product.
(Like all things Shenmue, it’s the marketing that’s sh*tty.)

In terms of how engrossing the experience will be (a clear sigh of "quality")….it all depends on the $$$ collected. If they’re smart, they’ll include Paypal/ Latebacker options, and keep on marketing the KS long past its expiration date, to really meet those stretch goals and flesh out the game mechanics.

Regarding Shenmue 3 having lower production values (when compared to the first 2):
Not really an issue, IMO. Shenmue 1 wouldn’t cost anywhere near as much if it were made today. Most of the cutting-edge features that were revolutionary back in 1999 have not only become industry standards since, but have become mechanically cheaper as well. Basically, you can do more with less.

…Only thing that worries me are the stretch goals.

There's still a lot of man hours that would have to go into the environment and character design, but I have to agree with you. Motion capture was pretty new at that time, and they incorporated it way more than anyone else before and even for years after.

But there are no standards, are there? AAA and Indie are arbitrary terms invented to reflect the amount of money that goes into a project. I have never seen actual game standards that would scream "this is AAA!" or "this is so indie!". So yeah, unless we talk about the quality of the game, budget-wise Shenmue 3 is probably going to be in the middle. With that, it is good to remember Witcher 3 had, reportedly, a budget of 32 mln. You can make great games on a fairly modest budget these days!

I would be completely fine with Life is strange prodution values, also I recomend playing it, cool story, awesome OST, likable characters nice attention to details, everything I love about Shenmue and it is a low budget game.

I am not worried about it not being an AAA game, I personally think nowadays AAA games are those that have the same cost for marqueting and developement, Games like AC Unity, or The orther 1886, are not better than some low budget games as Life is strange, the main diference is the money spent marqueting the game. Imho

I love that game, I got a Shenmue-type vibe from it as well.
Hopefully part 4 will drop sometime next month [-o<

The Last of Us wipes the floor with Dark Souls...

I do love the game I just know Henry loves it more. ;-)

The Last of Us is the most overrated game I have ever played in my life. Game is utter poop.

Shenmue 3 is AAA game stuck as an indie project. I do still have high expectations for it, and so to me It will always be a triple A game until it isn't.

During much of the first half of The Last of Us, I thought it was the most overrated video games of all time. By the time I reached the end, I thought it was one of the greatest games of all time.

Out of interest, how far did you get, Henry Spencer?

TLOU is a good game with surprisingly a lot of gunplay and open areas. I was expecting corridor cutscene simulator but got a decent shooter with some proper horror elements.

The story has a good pace and the end twist was also pretty ballsy and gave it a unique personally.

Out of all the game does good, the media shoved it aside and praised it like a visual novel.
