What the hell is going on?

What the hell is going on?

Postby Mankal » Sun Dec 19, 2004 10:11 am

I want to know who the hell thought up the idea of taking shenmue, one the greatest games ever made in my opinion, and turn it into and online game. Not only online, but somehow Ryo and every other person in the Shenmue series killed Goku and took all their powers. I personally think that who ever thought this idea up should be pulled out into the street and shot.

I must admit, I did (a while back) think that an online shenmue game would be very good. But this game does not do what I imagined it should. For example, even though it may not be as interesting I would much rather simply walk around the town of dobuita or hong kong and talk to people online. And then you can meet up in places like kowloon for a streey fight/gamble...etc...And the graphics would be identical to the previous Shenmue games. Also, you would follow you own adventure off with others, kind of like Phantasy Star Online, but it just hasn't worked out that way i guess...

I also thought of a Shenmue Online, but not a MMORPG. I thought it would be on Xbox and have online fighting touraments and ranks.

Yes, I agree, Hazuki. That would be interesting with online tournements and whatnot. However, I don't believe any of you have played the game. Thus your "opinions" can not even be valid, for they are thoughts, not true opinions.

None of us can state a 100% informed opinion until we've played SO, but based on the information we have now (which includes gameplay movies) we can take a pretty good stab at what it'll be like. DBZ-style fireballs and the sort are looking particularly probable at the moment.

That is gameplay. What of the storyline? Is it still hidden from us? Besides, that's the cool way to shoot fireballs. Ryu and Chun Li do it.

Uh, you might want to break out the dictionary there, buddy. The basic definition of an opinion is the way someone thinks about something. thinks = thoughts; opinions are composed of thoughts. There is no criteria for having a "true" opinion, nor is there such a thing at all. Opinions are often superficial, non-permanent, and can be (sometimes) altered when given sufficient evidence to counter the preconception. Then again, some people are just stubborn assholes.
My point is, an opinion doesn't have to be based on any fact in order to be "valid." That's the very definition of an opinion! People don't have to play the game to have an opinion of it. Some people think it's a bad idea, me being one of them. They think the gameplay just doesn't match up with the Shenmue experience. They think it's stupid to make a spin-off title before completing the original project. And, to a more frivolous extent, they think fireballs and forcefields don't belong in a Shenmue game. There's nothing wrong with thinking this, and in fact it's quite logical. Some people, most people in fact, are giving the game a chance because they're desperate for a new Shenmue game. That's fine, but that doesn't mean people who are disappointed with the decision are meant to feel as outsiders, or non-supporters of the Shenmue series. Their opinions are just as valid as anybody else's. And it's wrong to say otherwise.
Just as some can speak of how good the game can be, other have the equal right to speak of how bad it can be. Period.

Seems like a pretty harsh comment, but you'd be surprised just how many times those words have been repeated in this forum. ;)

Umm.. Well its a MMORPG... there are not many MMORPG's out without any magic people... So basically for it to be a success it needs those kinds of things in it.. Remember this is based for the Korean market also and thats the big thing in Korea MMO's and magic and stuff so Yu Suzuki knows what hes doing...

Also welcome..

I agree but I don't as well. It doesn't need fire balls to be a success. I guess they are reaching out to the other people to play and discover Shenmue, but for the die hard fans of the original 2 having all sort of magical moves may throw us off. This is not Street Fighter after all. If I am a fan of SF (Which I am.) and played a game with out the super uppercuts or fireballs than I wouldn't want to play it. This game to me is a simulation of real life with real moves. I am not saying Chi is not real nor am I saying you can't have it and be even more powerful, but I have never witnessed a visiable fireball coming from some one's hands.

I think most fans of the series will think that it will become less important to chat with NPCs and it will become like every other MMORPG to date, a leveling tread mill. I did not play Shenmue to level up. I played it to explore the Asian cities and learn of it's people and see where Ryo would do next. Will they have all the people (NPCs) roaming the streets doing their things every day? Can you wake up and follow some one from their house to their work to their lunch break to their work again and then to their house till the next day? I very much doubt it. It will probably be like all the other MMORPGs, they will just stand there and have you talk to a lifeless NPC. Of course now we have real players you can talk to, but I would also like to have the NPCs from the first two.

Can I go into First Person and open drawers and explore pottery looking for clues? Will I be able to have a kitten as a pet or play other SEGA games with in the MMORPG (That one will probably be in there since I seen the machines in a pic.). Will I be able to use a controller which should be a must have to pull off the fighting moves just as the other games or will it be binded or even macroed crap like a lot of other games have?

I am hoping Shenmue will be good online, but my faith in it is not high. I know they can make it good, but will they... the way most of the fans would like it to be (I am guessing.)... is doubtful. But it is early and only time will tell. Maybe every thing that I want will be in it. Maybe every thing from the SP series will be in it as well along with the addition of other real players. I hope so.

It is also my personal opinion that the MMORPG would be best served on the XBOX for 2 reasons. Shenmue 2 was on it and also because of XBOX Live and the controllers that you would need to use. Then again Shenmue on the PC you could have people of various powered comps and still play al though undoubtly I would not be able to play at all.

If you guys are so upset, then don' t pay any attention to the posts, forums, topics, and news about Shenmue Online. Any TRUE Shenmue fan would at least buy 1 copy so SEGA would collect more oney. You don't HAVE to play it.
