There's a big red 実 there where there it should be, in fact, a 實, as that is the traditional Chinese form used in Hong Kong. So, in that one screenshot, we have two Japanese character variants (広 and 実 in place of 廣 and 實) on the shop signs. Which makes me think that, for all the Chinese writing, the developers simply used a Japanese program without taking into account the fact that Japanese uses certain variants not used anywhere in China. Seems pretty negligent, if you ask me, especially in a game with such minute attention to detail in its other aspects.

It's really cool that you have picked up those differences as it never occurred to me when I played it again a few years ago (not that I'm claiming fluency in either Chinese or Japanese). That being said, I have to disagree with the negligence comment. When it comes to videogames, the only attention to detail games should be scrutinized for is towards its internal world consistency. Unless Yu Suzuki was claiming to make 1 to 1 representation of the real world, what we see in Shenmue 2 seems fine to me. The reason is in Shenmue's world, though there's an acknowledgement of a Chinese language (by the gibberish spoken by Joy and the fact Ryo can't read Chinese characters as example) the entire population of Hong Kong and most likely China (seeing that Shenhua living in a remote village communicates perfectly with Ryo) consistently speak in native Japanese. So it is not strange at all that we see use of Japanese translation variants of Chinese in public signs and billboards. Immersion wise, it just appears to me that the Japanese occupation in South East Asia during WW2 left a strong cultural impact in the region, an alternative reality of sorts in Shenmue's world. Of course it was likely all done because of the lack of budget for an all Chinese dub cast, but as of the actual execution it is what it is, and it's consistent across the game's narrative.

Seeing how ugly Mass Effect's animations are, it puts into perspective how ahead of it's time Shenmue was in body movement, expression and proportions.

Out of boredom, I've done a 1920x1080 "collage" with some WIP Shenmue 3 images.

If any of you would like to change his wallpaper.

Whoever designed that image of Ryo from the Kickstarter video should be working on the game itself.

This is Esppiral's (Dojo member) work if I'm not wrong.

I would sign right here, right now for Ryo looking that good.

Yeah, Suzuki should outsource that responsible to Esppiral in all honesty.

That's not what I meant. I'm sure the final Ryo model will be "spot-on"!

No, I know I'm just giving credit where credit is due.

Knowing how perfectionist Suzuki is, I have no doubt Ryo Will look just how we imagine.

If you remember Ryo's model before Shenmue 1 launch, they improved it even months before release the game.

I have faith in Yu and his team, they will make a good job.

Does anyone know how Trey Ratcliff the photographer managed to get this level of details?

I've tested TONS of 4K wallpapers but no one was as crisp as this one, that's insane. (A good sign? 8) )

Finally getting around to continuing my playthrough of Disk 4 of Shenmue II (which I encourage everybody to do thanks to the added context it lends to areas like Bailu in the wake of Shenmue III), and I realised the minimap in the forest in Shenmue II has the same dark semi-transparent "bubble" around it as the tentative minimap in Shenmue III.

Nothing explosive, but a neat little detail all the same.

I wrote about this before around when SIII was first announced. Disc 4 is a revelation.

Can be found here:

It's a highly positive topic following the triumph of the announcement/KS. Highly suggested for feel good Shenmue fan emotions.

I was thinking that the most difficult thing is what Suzuki's team is what they are doing right now and have done from the start, making a game from scratch with an engine they aren't fully used to.

Once they finish the development of Shenmue 3, making Shenmue 4 will be easier than make Shenmue 3. They will be able to reuse some parts and maybe the project will be less expensive.

If they delayed the game a year and wanted to make Shenmue 4 as well as 3, I would take that in a heartbeat. Especially since 4 may be the last game of the series.

It'd take more than a year to develop IV alongside III, unfortunately.
