The project has been underway for a long time now to be hiring for such a top level position as this...

Not really, considering we now know they only began prototyping in earnest in January.

It's likely a signifying milestone that they're exiting the prototyping phase and going into full production, or at least expect to in the coming months.

Besides, Yu had said something about his responsibilities on the project being rather expansive and potentially overwhelming. Hiring his right hand man from the original games is a smart way to delegate tasks and let Yu focus on where he's needed, and on the overall bigger picture.

Is it possible that this is also our first look at Choubu?
The plastic garbage bag in the background doesn't seem like something you'd find in a rural village like Bailu.

I'm curious, we know that Bailu village is rural based on Shenhua's descriptions. But what about Baisha? Do we know anything about it at all? Is it rural? or a bit more urban?

That building also has wood. If other Bailu houses are built like Shenhua's they don't use wood. Remember the convo Ryo had with Shenhua about how Japanese houses are made of wood and this shocked her as a waste of wood and resources. That building has what looks like a wooden side panel along it.

Probably not Guilin.

I'm in agreement that it's probably Choubu in that screen, as it certainly looks more urbanised than either Bailu or Baisha.

Anybody think the weird placement of the crate is because it is a physics object that got knocked over in a fight or a chase?

It's hard to tell initially, because that part of the SS is rather blurry, but at closer inspection, yea I think you may be right. It seems to be pivoting on the rim of what looks like a trash can.

However on the otherhand, since there is text going on, this could easily be a scripted cutscene in the vain of like the cutscenes where Ryo drinks stuff he bought from a vending machine, kind of thing.

That scene is running at about 47FPS. I think that's pretty good for a prototype. Usually frame rate stabilizes near the end of development, and already it's running unlocked, they should achieve 30fps easily on PS4, and 60 on PC. imagine, shenmue III, 4k on PC. Dreams do come true.

Hard to make a fair statement, there is not so much to display. The footage is very comparable to an UE4's Life Is Strange standard scene which runs easily at 60 fps on PS4/One.

With YSnet aiming to make very interactive fights (ragdoll, destructible environments, quality animations) and maybe a seamless open world, it would be quite of an achievement to see Shenmue III reaching a stable framerate without any troubles.

Impatient to see what an old-school AM2's boss can deliver in the modern world. Since several years, pretty all developers fail to reach linear 30 fps for adventure games, with always the same apparent methodology: make the standard version for high PC gaming then downgrade it for console and pray that will go through.

Just read a fascinating paper written by Raphaël Lucas about Shenmue, published four months ago in the French magazine 'The Game'. I would have completely miss it if Shenmue Master did not have mention it in their last news.

The article focused quite widely on Keiji Okayasu and described him as the forgotten key member of AM2. It questioned why the Okayasu's games were never mentioned by Suzuki when he had to talk about his main influences.
The previous Okayasu's games, 'Sword of Vermilion' and 'Rent a Hero', were indeed very similar to Shenmue and both developped by AM2.
'Sword of Vermilion' was an open world with action-RPG mechanics while Rent A Hero shared with Shenmue the usage of the modern world, SF fights against thugs, the possibility of having different jobs to earn money, Suzuki's arcade machines, finding kittens and goes on.

Very independently from the Shenmue article, there was another one about Virtua Fighter in the history section of the issue. Rare enough to be worthy of note.

Very interesting. Is there a translation out there?

Nope. The article is enlightening but you can find most of their information on the web anyway.

Could Shenhua be talking about the very same mountains found on the picture in her house???

Some connection there? If so, then it's theory time.

Actually, that line couldn't be said by Shenhua, but by some old man, probably. The line begins with "What? Hummm..." in Japanese, and the way of saying is an old man's. A young girl would never say like that.
Besides, she seems to be placed in a bit odd background; with a plastic bag-full of garbage and a beer case that would be found on a Japanese backstreet.

Apparently, that screen shot was not taken from a real game scene, but was composed for some experiment, I guess.

Great observation! My Japanese is really bad and I didn't catch on to that. Thank you again Kiyuu!
Even though it may just be a test, it is still great looking :) Super excited for S3!
