Havent even given it the greenlight?

So long Shenmue and Shenmue 2 HD before Shenmue 3.

No strategy. No implementation. Just looking into cleared licenses. Ok Sega. Only been 14 months now. No sweat.

How long have they been talking about this now? and yet there is still no Greenlight?

Yup, we are not gonna be seeing this before Shenmue III. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see it at all.

It's becoming a broken record at this point....

Sorry for the negativity :/

Usually I say that this kind of stuff is marketing PR fluff, but this seems quite exciting. I'm just hoping he's talking about the views of the company as a whole and not just his views.
Also, if they do go through with it, I feel they'd be cutting it a little fine considering that it hasn't been greenlit yet. However to be fair, it's a port, not a remake and if it does get the greenlight within the next month or so (which I do realise, isn't very likely), I feel it could be finished in time to be released alongside 3 (especially if 3 gets delayed).

All in all, interesting news. But I'm still a little bit doubtful.

Interesting. We just had an interview with the guy a couple of days ago.
He pretty much says the same thing, just with different wording. Maybe a little more than before.

But after all it's the same message. They know about it, they wanna do it, haven't done anything yet.

Here's how I'm interpreting it: They don't want to go through the """massive""" workload of replacing all of the licensed brands (in other words, they don't want to do any work), so they'd rather risk not releasing the games at all by counting on the sponsors to comply.

Just imagine some Sega execs sitting in a burning building, waiting for the fire department even though they could escape through the front door.

Even if they have been greenlit they wouldn't say so until the official announcement.

... Or it could just be that they want to honour the original games integrity. Which is honestly the right way to go. But taking this long to strike up new deals? It's a pee take tbh with you. I fear if it's not green lit by now, anything we see before Shenmue 3 will just be a rushed job. Saying that, I'd just be happy with straight ports/slightly optimised versions at this point anyway.

So we'll not see Shenmue HD before Shenmue III. If yes, it will be a miserable and opportunistic port.

Major evidence that they never believed in Yu's kickstarter, so does Shenmue still. Embarrassing.

Btw, the title is as thrilling as misleading.

It is a step in the right direction, but atleast a year too late! What with how long it takes them with all the localisation stuff aswell, it definitely won't be before Shenmue 3 unless they're just pulling the wool over our eyes :P

Oh FFS, enough with these lame duck excuses already.

What f*cking licenses?
It’s called “Jet Cola”, and it was in Shenmue 1. Problem solved.

Start remastering now; worry about the BS later. Worse comes to worst, no one will lose any sleep over Ryo’s fancy new “Rhymex” watch and “Face Logic” backpack.

...or just come out with the real reasons for not having done this sh*t sooner.

They've said from the start they wanted to preserve the games as close to the Dreamcast originals as possible.

This is really just a continuation of that, and further confirmation they're trying to undo the legal knot of the tie-in brands. If they don't get the licencing, then they'll do the texture replacements where needed. I'm actually slightly proud of SEGA for not taking the easiest option available.

I would not be surprised if they are working on it silently, but can't announce it until the licence issue is straight up put to bed one way or another.

No real reason to be doom mongering about this. They've stated their intention to make it happen, have given us a clear answer about what the hold up is, and have continually reaffirmed they absolutely want to do it.

This isn't like six-seven years ago when we got excited when SEGA brought up Shenmue unprompted. Their European COO has gone on record saying it's a project with significant support inside of the company "with [their] full attention".

The licensing stuff can be about the tech, like some guys said a long time ago, who knows.

I know I said that they'll probably would release it after SIII, but now for some reason I think they won't be that stupid.

This is pretty awesome. I get your frustration with the "not even greenlit yet"-situation, but to get such a clear statement about the HD remasters directly from Sega still feels exciting. Just a little over a year ago this would have been unthinkable. Hopefully they'll find a way to hurry up and sort out their corporate bullshit soon.
