I glanced over the interview, but couldn't find anything about the Houser Brothers... He just says Take Two copied the open world formula from Shenmue and made a lot of money off of it.

In part 1, he also says Shenmue changed Final Fantasy, which is a weird thing to say considering FF games follow their own formula since before Shenmue. Excluding FF15 which I think wasn't really revealed to be Open World by the time this interview came out (2010)

If that's what it says then it's not the right interview, as he's definitely recounted somewhere the conversation I described.

Part Two of the interview is now up.

http://www.phantomriverstone.com/2017/0 ... rview.html

This part has a focus on "the generation gap" with the younger Katsuhiro Harada talking about VR and paying homage to Yu Suzuki and his generation for their groundwork. He also points out similarities in the kinds of challenges he has been facing.

I've translated the Tile-Breaking document in my latest blog post:

I had suspicions that the tile breaking game was repurposed for that one-off rock breaking segment in II, but it's nice to see the design doc confirms it by tying it to learning "Jie".

What's next, Switch? The fishing document?

Sure, why not! Although in fact it looks like there's not a lot of writing on it to be translated. Might bundle it with the washing spot one...

There must be something metaphysical when the idea of "fishing" and "washing" your clothes creates excitement in you.

Or is there something wrong with me?

I've completed giving the Fishing and Washing documents English annotations.

The potential age of these documents is interesting.

The clothes washing one looks VFRPG-era because that's clearly Ryo's design while he was still Akira (t-shirt, spiked upwards hair), but the fishing one looks more like Ryo as we know him in Shenmue (jacket, hair more slicked back).

Yeah, it is a bit of a mystery. Considering Yu's personality though, I suppose if they had been newly drawn up for Shenmue III, he probably couldn't have resisted saying so at the interview (with a smile).

Mm. Neither are recent, that's for sure. It'll be interesting to see if in the final game the concepts have been included or repurposed somehow.

Great interview thanks Switch... I like Yu words from part three a lot so encouraging.
