I'm hyped but very subdued about it? I guess I'm just playing the waiting game right now like everyone else.

Honestly, for the longest time I've personally felt the "it won't live up to expectations" remark to be some bullshit way for journalists to tell us "oh no, you don't actually want these games", when they have zero idea of the investment fans have in a series like Shenmue and what they actually expect out of it.

Of course the obvious answer is "oh well it won't be a technical marvel like it was in 1999, so that's why you'll be disappointed", but that's also bullshit.

A.) Tech showpieces come and go, and if there weren't more to the series than that, Shenmue would have been long forgotten. You don't see Crysis fans clamouring for a sequel in the same way Shenmue fans have for over a decade.

B.) You just have to look at the informal poll on this very forum a few threads down to see technical achievement is not a priority. Sure, it's a small sample size, but we're the hardest of the hardcore out of the series fans, and the ones who have been living with genuine expectations of Shenmue III for 15+ years. If someone claimed they were a Shenmue fan because of the graphics, I wouldn't fuckin' believe them.

Yu & co. deserve the benefit of the doubt to create a sequel worthy of the name Shenmue. If we all thought there was no way it could live up to expectations, what the fuck was the point of fighting for it for 15 years?

But remember when Star Wars came back in 1999?

That was also a 16 year hiatus and everyone was super excited about another Star Wars film.

THEN we found out that the creator had lost his talent over the years.

Will the same happen with Shenmue 3?

Why do people still respond to SMDzero as if he's being serious? He's been trolling for reactions since the day he registered.

Ding ding ding.

FUD is powerful, though. It's only right to push it back whenever possible.

Either this is ignorance or trolling. Yu has been a producer and director in many games since Shenmue II including Virtua Fighter 4 (considered an all time fighting game classic), Virtua Cop 3, OutRun 2 (classic). While some of the games he produced/directed after that were questionable, the man was obviously not allowed full extent of his creative faculties, and for a certain period couldn't find a fucking job and had to make due with what he had. Shenmue III is the first real chance the guy has had at making a real game since Psy-Phi which while unreleased was considered great by many who got to actually play it.

Bringing up George Lucas makes no sense. George Lucas was a man with nothing to prove. He was a millionaire (was he a billionaire when Phantom Menace came out?). Even when his Star Wars prequels had extremely poor reviews, they still fed his empire and the man became even richer. Yu has no such circumstance. He's a man with nothing to lose. His reputation is in tatters. I repeat, HE COULDN'T GET A JOB and his name was ruined despite being one of Japan's gaming father figures. He has every reason NOT to be complacent like George because he WANTS success. The situations of these men could not be more further apart. George made Phantom Menace because he wanted to. Yu couldn't make Shenmue III for over a decade and had to make concession after concession to finally be able to produce a sequel that no one except his diehard faithful (us) wanted. Yu Suzuki had to grovel, lose his pride, and make sacrifices to get this game made. Comparing him to Lucas (who had everything he could have wanted including the financial support to achieve his dreams) does him a complete and utter disservice.

Furthermore, there are countless examples of film directors who came out of long retirement and made movies people consider classics such as Quentin Tarantino. You are treating art as if it is made in a vacuum. Please consider this.

Nothing much to be honest. All quiet since they have knuckled down for Shenmue 3. Hoping for some big news throughout the year which will spark the place off again. Keep on the lookout bud.

my understanding is that george lucus was limited by sfx in the 1970s/80s. he wanted all the star wars films to be more like episode 1 (it turns out hes against the retro style of ep8 / rogue one)

so george lucus never "lost it" he just fulfilled his vision with ep1,2,3

were see with S3 but people tend to make the best art when they have everything going against them. i believe YS will do his best, after all this is his child.

that's not a good example. nobody hates the first 3 episodes of star wars because of it's new cgi or anything. no everyone hates the first 3 episodes mainly because of hayden christensen. the biggest pussy to have ever been in a movie. a whining little bitch who we had to believe was the young vader. lucas managed to destroy the whole legacy of darth vader with those movies.

Well you COULD also make the argument that now that Yu Suzuki has nothing to lose and is not burdened by the commercial success of a 70million project on his back he is now finally free to make a Shenmue game on his own terms.

Shenmue III is a Kickstarter and now he has to please fans and make an impression so they get funding for IV from a big name publisher.

What on Earth are you even talking about? Shenmue was made to because Yu wanted it. It was a dream project. Shenmue III was made to save Yu's career, his and fans dreams, ten years of people treating him like a failure, and the future of Shenmue. Back then he was given all the freedom he wanted and sure, there was pressure. But I'd say that with a limited budget and more riding on it, III has much more to prove.

That's all I'll say about that.
