In the previous games it was impossible for Ryo run into and collide with an NPC, he would merely slowdown and come to a stop just before coming into proximity with them.

Should Shenmue 3 continue with this scheme, or should NPC collisions be added?

Unless there are chases while in FREE Quest mode (like chasing Ren/Sam/Larry/Cool Z), I expect this is probably the most likely option. The advanced ragdoll stretch goal might come into play here either way.

By today's standards, lack of NPC collision would feel/look very out of place, but I think it should be kept as simple as possible, with the second or third option fitting the bill, but I, personally, am edging more towards the second; Ryo colliding with NPCs causes them to move slightly, but not stagger, and he doesn't apologise. Save that for QTE chases.

Should Ryo be able to KILL NPCs?

Once they are killed then they could fade away and leave a white chalk outline of their body on the street.

It should be kept the same like in Shenmue I and II because there was nothing wrong with it in the first place. I mean, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it!'

I'd go with the second or third as well. Maybe throw in a QTE to move left or right while you're running directly at an NPC.

I like the idea of the fourth option. That way you can introduce a reputation system. If you are more liked, you will get more help from the NPC's.

Surely causing NPCs to stagger or fall in the first place would put Ryo in their bad books - a '-1', if you will - but apologising would negate the incident, causing it to go back to nil, no? That wouldn't work in terms of a reputation system as no reputation would be gained in the event of Ryo apologising for bumping into them; only lost if the player chooses not to apologise.

Colliding with the NPCs could add immersion and make maps easier to walk through, but only gently, so Ryo wouldn't have to apologize and possibly slow down the gameplay ( :D imagine being forced to bump against everyone around multiple times just to cross a road, with Ryo pausing each time for a few seconds to apologize!).
