Ryo's clothes look too tight

Ryo's clothes look too tight

Postby Doom_Infinite » Thu Mar 16, 2017 3:13 pm

Anybody else concerned about the fact that Ryo's jeans look like they're two sizes too small for him? In Shenmue I and II he wore what appeared to be a standard cut of the 80's. Sure in the 80's it was also fashionable to wear tight jeans but Ryo wasn't trying to be fashionable. On top of that it made sense to give him that cut of jeans because when Shenmue was made the style in the late 90's was more loose. Now he's suddenly wearing skin tight jeans of the type you see in New York and big cities in 201X. Also his jacket looks too tight too (this was NOT in fashion in the 80's). In the first two games Ryo had a properly fitting jacket that had shoulder seams ending at the tip of his shoulders, not at the armpits.

Anyone else hoping they fix these before release? I'm unbelievably hyped for Shenmue III but with over a year in development we still haven't had a chance to see the character's new designs (and that's fine with me, I don't want to rush them) but from the latest update where we see Ryo from the back it's looking like they aren't keeping his appearance true to the original Dreamcast incarnations. I hope I'm wrong here. :/

ignore the arrows pointing at the edges of the cupboard, I'm only using the pictures to compare what their jackets looked like. Sorry I couldn't find a better shot without the arrows.

They're not finished working on the model.

It's as simple as that.

At least Ryo's proportions look like an actual human being now.

Well, great to see you carry on your craft in such a brilliant way, Sherlock, but that image is a work in progress. If you'd be good enough to point your magnifying glass at the bottom of said image...

I understand that it's not finished, glad to have it pointed out to me again as I feel better already. :')

Nevertheless I feel it's a good time to point it out and put it out there so that any eyeballs from the dev staff that may hang around here have it brought to their attention. Ryo's clothing in the original games were very defining of his character, easy going, clean cut and caring but not self conscious. I hope Yu Suzuki gets on top of that cause who ever designed his current beta build is way off.

I'm only concerned that Ryo's jeans look a bit too long in the back.

Now a days people wear shorter pants but that was in fashion back then. I remember in the 80's we wanted to wear longer jeans and it was exactly like that, when you took shoes off inside the house the jeans would drag around and wear down which was a problem. :(

I've been dreaming Shenmue in next-gen for years but the Ryo's jacket is the only thing I always failed to imagine in modern graphics without Ryo looking laughable. Dreamcast's Ryo was cool but Shenmue 3? Good luck to the artists.

It was 1987. People wore tight jeans in the 80s.

Yes and no, both loose and tight were fashionable in the 80's but Ryo wears them loose so some consistency would be nice. Also in the 80's tight jackets were not in, it was the opposite, jackets with big shoulders were in fashion. It just looks like its two sizes too small, that or it shrank in a washing machine.

If anything, Ryo's jacket looks too big. Nowhere near as thick and substantial as his jacket should be either; it looks like a lighter version of the Insert Coin jacket. But yeah, this model is a WiP, so don't put too much stock into it.

I still wear my jeans like that. And why are you lot moaning about his clothes rather than commenting on the fact he looks like this guy?:

Ryo's hair looks different does that mean you change Ryo's hair in the game?

The character model will be one of the last things they finalize in all likelihood. Yu's attention to detail won't let things like that remain as they are imho. (Look at the neon lights on the edges of the arcade machine shown, the way they realistically fade near the tops of the tubes, etc. Yeah, the attention to detail is going strong.)

They'll get it as close to perfect as they possibly can before release. I suspect that's a ways off, though. They're definitely very aware of any shortcomings seen in these updates. Yu is too obsessive about detail not to be. :p

Are we seriously debating about Ryo's sense of style?

I love this community

I'm surprised Ryo's obvious bedhead hasn't received its share of criticism yet.
