It'd be poor form to just go "lol forget about it".

At the same time, they never really set out a timetable for when it'd be ready besides maybe a vague comment or two back before development had really began. Don't sweat it just yet.

Bumping for a bit of news.

New interview with Cedric Biscay R.E Shenmue III and it's release date. I had to use Google Translate here, so y'know.

I'm always surprised to hear very regularly about the release date because in fact it was originally given and it has not moved yet. So we're on the 15th of April? - the date when we did the interview. - Well, on April 15, 2017, Shenmue 3 is still scheduled to be released in December 2017. So there are no conflicting elements to this day, but it can evolve. But in any case, we are not late in development so it does not mean that we can not have a problem last minute or anything. In any case, the developers have not alerted me on the slightest problem to date.

Additionally, regarding Sony's part in Shenmue III:

And then of course, they will actively participate in marketing the game soon.

Wow! I really think this is good news! Another confirmation that the release date has not been moved and Sony marketing the game soon, so I suppose this could mean that we will see the game at E3 :)

Just quickly read the interview, Cedric basically said that 1) Shenmue 3 project initially stalled because people "having rights over it" (Sega) didnt even wanna start talking about it, 2) Sony decided to help after the game got backed, 3) Cedric thinks the remasters of Shen 1&2 would help a lot with the marketing of the game but they depend on Sega, he cant do much about it.

Factoring in previous statements, I believe he's referring to the fact that when Sony got in contact, Yu and Cedric were already in the planning stages and looking at Kickstarter to boost Shibuya Productions' own backing. Sony then offered their stage at E3 to announce it, and probably made a provisional offer of additional support if the Kickstarter proved successful (which it quickly did). If the Kickstarter had flopped then E3 might have been the end of Sony's involvement.

That sounds like it could check out. Would make sense why Sony fucked their messaging when the support caught them by surprise.

Full translation (Probably not as accurate as it would be the other way round).

Q: Right now, you are producing Shenmue 3, which is still in development. How did things go with Sega and Sony to finally achieve this?

Cédric Biscay :To be fair, I would say it was possible in the first place thanks to the original author, Yu Suzuki. I know him very well and met him several times. At first, it was impossible to seriously consider a sequel to Shenmue 2, because the Licence owners (SEGA) didn't want to hear about it. Over time, we (Shibuya Productions) and Yu Suzuki wanted to work together on a game. So we launched a project who could not be completed in the end. At the same time, the situation about Shenmue 3 changed and Shibuya Productions decided to produce it. It's also at this time that we chose to work with crowdfunding, in order to check if the Community (fan base) was large enough and if it could help us funding the game.
Ultimately, the decision to make Shenmue 3 comes from Yu Suzuki and Shibuya Productions. Of course, SEGA allows us to use the licence, since they are the owners of the Shenmue franchise. Actually, Sony comes in a second phase, once they saw that everything was secured, that fundings were provided to support the project.
They (Sony) helped us a lot in terms of communication, in particular during E3 (2015) in Los Angeles, when we did the big announcement. And then of course, they will soon participate actively with the game marketing.

Q: So, Shenmue 3 will come out for PC and PS4, right?

Cédric Biscay : That's right, still planned for PC & PS4.

Q: And for Xbox One ? It seems to me they were disagreements on the matter?

Cédric Biscay : Not specifically disagreement, it's more that Microsoft showed late interest in having Shenmue 3 compared to Sony. Obviously, it's easier to want something when everything is easily accessible. We must remember that way before E3 in Los Angeles, everybody was thinking "Well, Shenmue 3 will never come out, it is a bit of a holy grail" or "the first two games didn't sell well enough so nobody will be interested in Shenmue 3". Truth is, from the moment we decided we would bypass/avoid those obstacles, a lot more people showed interest in being part of the adventure.

Q: Since we talk about Shenmue 3, do you have some exclusive news for us? Release date or story elements for example, etc...?

Cédric Biscay : It's not the right time for exclusive news. I'm always surprised that people ask me on a regular basis about the release date because actually, we gave one right from the start and it hasn't changed to this day. It's April 15 right? To this day, Shenmue 3 is still planned for a December 2017 release date. The situation can evolve but there are no contradicting elements at the moment. In any case, we are not running late with development. It doesn't mean we cannot encounter last-minute hitch or whatever. Anyhow, to this day, the development team didn't report any problem to me.

Q: There is also a rumour about HD remasters of the first two Shenmue and apparently, they should come out this year. Do you know if they will really come out this year? Real facts or fiction ?

Cédric Biscay : First of all, ever since the beginning of the project, this is what we would like to happen. Apparently, it’s something SEGA wants too. It’s only my personal opinion but there’s every chance that SEGA has an interest for those remasters, especially considering all the hype surrounding Shenmue 3. So, I cannot officially confirm the remasters, since I don’t work at SEGA, but it seems logical to me that those games come out eventually. What we would really like to see though, is those games released before Shenmue 3 comes out. This would help us a lot with the marketing but would also bring new players to the Series, because to be fair, start a Saga with the third episode isn’t very cool. If people have played the remasters first, it would be much more fun.

Q : About Shenmue 3 gameplay. Is it going to reach a wide audience, that is to say those who already know the franchise and the new comers ?

Cédric Biscay : That’s what we aim for. That’s what we included with Yu Suzuki in the game. Actually, what we really don’t want, is disappoint the fans. This is essential. And we don’t want to cut our self off from the gamers, this is as simple as that. Therefore, we try to balance things for everybody to be happy but not by making the game hard. It’s essential to keep everybody happy in the true sense of the word. We don’t want to diminish aspects to please others. We want everybody to be happy with the game, this is our goal.

I didn't translate the rest of the interview, since it's not Shenmue relevant.

Obviously, they are very advanced in the development if he says so and it seems likely they may launch the game at the estimate date. I wouldn't hold my breath but with Suzuki everything is possible.

As I thought, they are very secretive with the development, which is isn't bad at all and this will make a bigger impact when they release the first trailer. A lot of people who thinks the game is years away from being finalized will be very impressed.

E3 can't come soon enough!

I'm a big fan of the series, but I'm inquiring if the original games were as secretive and light on previews during their development cycles as III seems to be.

Obviously, it's fantastic news if they are still on target for release in roughly 8 months, as many of us did not(and probably still don't) expect that.

Let's see what E3 brings..two months left.

Considering the game was in development for Saturn and as far as I'm aware, we didn't even learn about it until after Shenmue II was released, I'm going to assume that they were indeed just as secretive during the initial development of Shenmue.

Same here. If it does get delayed though I would imagine that it would be revealed in either two ways.

Right at the end of the trailer with something like __/__/2018 just like Kingdom Heats 2.8
or right before December 2017 they do a video announcement saying they need more time to polish, debug it, etc. Just like what happened with Final Fantasy XV.

A bigger part of me feels like they are doing everything they can to make the release date though.

It's apples and oranges.

Shenmue III can't follow the traditional AAA press cycle that drags on for two years, so they're not. The only reason we even know Shenmue III exists is because it needed a Kickstarter to happen.

Until it reemerges at a big press show, all bets are off. The clock won't start running on preview coverage until after then.

That is good news indeed. A trailer of Shenmue III at E3? It feels almost as surreal as the actual game happening lol.

I put in $113 ($100 Kickstarter, $13 slacker back for the soundtrack). My PC is maybe as powerful as an Xbox 360. I was actually surprised when I attempted to play the Wreckfest beta last week and it actually worked. The detail wasn't nearly as great as the Youtube videos show but that's because of my hardware. I'm just surprised it ran. That being said, I doubt Shenmue 3 would run on my rig. I'll try out the demo to see if it does work but then I'll probably stop so that I don't ruin anything for my play through on PS4.

I actually don't really care if I get the demo so long as I get my PS4 copy and the soundtrack, I'll be happy.

Personally I would hope that, if it is to be delayed, they would announce that long before the original target date (December). If we get to October, November and it still looks like it's going to be released on time, I'm going to really be feeling intense anticipation at that point. And then at the last minute if they were to say, 'actually it'll be xx/xx/2018'... That would be tougher for me than if they were to announce a delay at E3 or around that time. But realistically, if they do make that decision at the last minute, I would have to accept that it's for the best even though it would be disappointing. Ultimately it's up to me to keep my own expectations in check. I just wonder what their criteria and time frame are for making a decision like that... it might not be something they reveal until years later at a GDC post mortem or equivalent presentation.
