Only thing that would make it disappointing is if we're throwing hadoukens and shit all over the place. I'll still play it all the way through, but I'm really hoping they don't get too crazy with it. We've only played about 15% of the story so we'll see.

And that's just because there is NO WAY that a game that everyone waited and dreamed about in every possible way for about 17 years will live up to expectations, regardless of how good it wil be.
Most plausible reasons:
1)"Too short"
2)"Open world too empty/not big enough/too few actually explorable cities"
3)"What, did it just end? Where was the Lan Di final battle? Wait, so the story didn't end???"
I think everybody should psychologically prepare themselves about this, because it will be really hard to be rational about this game, and to keep the expectations enoughly in check.
I pretty much agree with all of that. Yu said in one interview this one would be about as large as the first game. If it's as large and dense as the first I'll be mostly satisfied. If it's as large as the world in Shenmue 2 I'll be beyond thrilled. But I'm expecting Shenmue 1 size. I remember thinking after leaving Hong Kong that it was the end of Shenmue 2 but I couldn't believe it when the Guilin part started.
I'd love it if they ended 3 with some sort of closure just in case we don't get 4. But I'm not anticipating fighting Lan Di in 3.

I'm pretty sure it was confirmed that you fight Lan-di in Shenmue 3.

And yet that would entirely fit with all the mystical foreshadowing and pre-release footage. Lucky for you it's sounds like Yu decided to tone back on it in the kickstarter Q&A. I would have been fine with it, since the game was clearly leading to fantastical stuff.

Reminder: Yu Suzuki has already gone on the record saying that the amping up of Shenmue's mystical elements for Shenmue Online was specifically so the series fit the MMO genre better.

I don't know why that stuff bothers people so much anyway. it's a video game. I enjoy the reality simulation aspects of the game, but I'm ok with a few fantastical elements. Personally, I find it kind of weird you can buy all sorts of food in the game and not even eat it. Not game ruining, though.

I'm not too worried about the mystical elements in Shenmue III at all. I don't think is going to be like Jade Empire. That game has too much magic and crazy stuff.

I thought the Lan Di fight had long been confirmed for S3. I'm pretty sure Yu went on record saying so. They've probably even have the bgm already. At least this is definitely connected to an encounter with Lan Di.

It's unused as in, on the disc but not actually played anywhere in game.
