    THE NEWS

~*~NEW~*~ 27th July - YSnet announces they will be hosting a meet n' greet session with Yu Suzuki in the entertainment area, and also confirms that an update with the "Latest news about Shenmue III" revealed in the business area will be available via Kickstarter and the Shenmue III website.

13th July - YSnet announces via the KS they will be showing the game in the business area of the event restricted from public entry (please note, the update does specify that backers will be able to get the "latest on-site information" through games media outlets), but are attempting to put together an event for fans attending the show via the public areas. It is also confirmed Yu Suzuki will personally be in attendance.

    THE BASICS

YSnet announced in the June 2017 Kickstarter update that they will be taking Shenmue III this August to Gamescom in Germany, saying "While we are still working out the details with our partners, we plan to show our newest movie clips, share the latest updates and even make some new announcements."

Cedric Biscay has said via Twitter that Shibuya Productions, primary financier and one of Shenmue III's marketing partners, will not be the ones showcasing Shenmue III at the event, and that further details will be available "soon".

Sony, YSnet's other known marketing partner, have not confirmed a Gamescom presence but have recently hinted that a conference may be in the works for the show.

    THE SPECULATION

Could YSnet be bringing a trailer to Gamescom? While it's impossible to know the style of the video YSnet will be using to show off the game, I think we can all safely assume Gamescom will end up being the most revealing look at the game we've had.

According to resident translator Switch, the plural "movie clips" in the English version of the update is intentional, as the author would have to check the meaning with whoever wrote the Japanese version; as apparently the language doesn't make a plural distinction. If we are to take it at face value that the English author followed this process, we can assume there will be more than one Shenmue III video coming out of Gamescom.

Shenmue HD has been rumoured for a very long time, but in the last year the anticipation has reached fever pitch with domain registrations, endless "insider" info, and SEGA themselves expressing a desire to make it. SEGA have kept Shenmue III at arm's length since it was announced two years ago, and we have no evidence the dynamic of this relationship has changed, let alone that Shenmue HD truly exists. So... keep expectations in check.

There are plenty of "cleaning house"-style announcements to make in regards to rewards fulfilment, pledge upgrades, and how long the Slacker Backer site will continue to be open for. Will they be part of the announcements made during Gamescom? Possibly. We can at least hope they are addressed in the KS updates following the event.

This thread is for discussion, speculation, and breaking news. HUGE news will warrant its own thread, but in most cases I will just change the title of this topic to reflect the current developments, and add a kind of newsfeed to the OP to keep people up to speed.

Big thanks to Kiske for the banner. Happy posting!

I will be there on behalf of the Dojo with live Twitter and Instagram posts throughout the event. Other sections of the community may be there also but it's still all being worked on at the moment, so more details will be revealed over the coming weeks. :nice!:

To split hairs, one video can contain multiple clips, so we may get a single montage of footage from different scenes.

It'd be a very archaic way to convey things if that's what was originally meant.

It's a possibility, but I would like to think whoever handles the updates in English and Japanese would avoid such a confusing phrasing.

I hope they show this time the last version of Ryo in the trailer.

Seeing how detailed are the last NPC showed, I'm sure Ryo and Shen Hua will exceed my expectations.

I'd like to see some combat scenes and some seconds of free quest.

Will they present the clips in a cinematics/trailer style?

As a reminder, Suzuki San used the plural too last December when he gave an interview to weekly Famitsu.

Perhaps everything shifted to later during 2017 and those are the same polished videos?
(featuring real character models?)

Do you guys think we can expect something similar to Magic 2016, with a real conference?

We probably won't know until we actually see what they have to show. It may depend on how they're showing the game too, so if we get confirmation of a Sony conference/that Shenmue III will be showcased there; then I'd personally assume yes.

In any case, it's going to be above the level of anything we've seen so far, so the format might not matter so much.

Stage shows at Gamescom are apparently not unheard of, but the way the KS described plans as being something YSnet would have to arrange with partners is probably an indication they're showing at someone else's event rather than their own thing.

What I'm hoping for at Gamescom with Shenmue 3 is:
- Some real good footage of Shenmue 3. Something that will make us want the game even more then we do already
- Shenmue I and II HD announcement
- A end date for the Slacker Backer campaign

What we will probably see:
- Small clips of Shenmue 3 that doesn't show too much yet but will still be good
- No Shenmue HD announcement
- More pledge/tiers upgrades

Let's hope for the best!

I don't know yet what I'd prefer. A really big badass trailer with lots of various things in it, that really gets the masses hyped for the game or some casual gameplay footage. Both would be ideal I guess.

I definately want to see finalized or at least much refined models of Ryo and Shenhua where they get the familiar look down.

Shenmue HD... Might be a good opportunity to unveil it, depending on how big they actually present Shenmue III.
But I'm not getting my hype up just yet. Rather stay careful with that.

I think the biggest key we need to keep an eye out for is to what extent Sony will be present. I don't know if they do press conferences at Gamescom, but it'd be a true indicator of where Shenmue III will appear. It's possible they'll just have their own panel, but I feel Sony has a hand somewhere. They gotta keep up that marketing end sometime.

Sega's presence will also bode well. I still think we will see Shenmue HD sometime. It's probably going to be here if anything. Possibly PSX, but I don't know about that. Same with III again at PSX.

The reason I think that is Sony self admitted they held stuff back at E3. Trailers for FFVIIR, Sucker Punch IP, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Last of Us 2. Dates for Kingdom Hearts III, God of War, Shadow of the Collosus and more..

That's a LOT of heavy hitters and again, Shenmue may not fit into that scale of a conference. Not yet, anyway..

BlueMue, I'm also hoping for a more refined, better version of Ryo and Shenhua models. I wonder what characters like Ren and Lan Di will look like?

No idea what is gonna happen with Sony, I also can't help but feel that maybe it's too early to announce Shenmue HD? That's even if it ever gets announced..

Sony have done conferences at Gamescom in the past. I believe they've skipped the last year or two, but it's been hinted at they may make a return this year in some form.

The update made clear YSnet is coordinating with someone to show Shenmue III at Gamescom at least. With Shibuya excusing themselves from the equation, that only leaves Sony as a known marketing partner to help facilitate the showing.

I wouldn't worry about Shenmue III getting shut out if there is a conference, though. Sony's E3 was an experiment in showcasing almost exclusively AAA games, and was a little... controversial for it. Feedback aside, would they do two shows like that in a row? Probably not. They'll be shutting out a lot of developers and not giving a full idea of the games coming to the platform in the near future.

Talking about partners...
Wasn't there a discussion here on the Dojo about a potential publisher for the PS4 version of Shenmue 3 or did I dream that?

Depends when you remember the discussion taking place.

But Sony is the publisher for the PS4 version as far as we know.

I should probably just stop drinking in the middle of the afternoon.
