Sega Hints at Big Things
Company promises new titles for the year.

January 14, 2004 - Sources in Japan have revealed some of Sega's upcoming plans for the year. Judging by these reports, its seems that Sega has some big guns up its sleeves.

First up are three new titles. First is an adventure game with a world view that's never before been seen. Next is an RPG that Sega hopes to turn into a series. Finally, there are plans for a game based off a movie that's from a studio receiving lots of attention from Hollywood. These three games will be unveiled at a game show -- either E3 or the Tokyo Game Show.
The company has plans beyond these three titles, of course. You can expect a new massively multiplayer Online RPG bearing the Sega name at some point. Also, the company has some big plans for its Tsukurou series of sports titles. Finally, the end of the year should see the release of a big new title in a new genre in all three territories.

Vague hints, to be sure, but enough to get us excited about things to come. Will this be the year that Sega finally returns to its past glory? Stay tuned

This sounds interesting, doesn't it?

"First is an adventure game with a world view that's never before been seen"

Don´t sound like shenmue III. because Shenmue has been seen before of course.

"Next is an RPG that Sega hopes to turn into a series."

Don´t sound like shenmue III either. Shenmue is already a serie.

"Finally, there are plans for a game based off a movie that's from a studio receiving lots of attention from Hollywood"

Well, this could be Shenmue III. You can interpret this as a view on the world thats never been seen, not a new world thats never been seen. Maybe they mean they'll have alot of Eastern culture and mythology that hasn't been seen in many games before.

I remember Pulse reporting that a Virtua fighter game other than Quest and the main series could be revealed at E3.

Sorry thats all I can remember but can anyone can find additional info on this.

The good thing about E3 is that you often get unexpected surprises so I am still hoping like everyone else shenmue II shows up.

True. But Shenmue III will be a new world though. We haven't been to Bailu Village and so forth. Perhaps it means that?

These three titles will obviously be epics, or at least, SEGA hopes they will be. So it seems reasonable to assume that Digital Rex has produced them, and they sure don't sound like Shenmue III. If it actually is the case that Digital Rex has made all three of those games, I doubt they'd be able to fit Shenmue III in.

Forget you've ever heard of Shenmue, but you're a regular player of games. SEGA announce " an adventure game with a world view that's never before been seen." How on earth does "a world view" remotely imply a mere setting or location? Most video games take place in fantastical worlds anyway!

We're talking about the way you interface with the game.

Now, if we're being optimistic, we could say that Shenmue, the game with the best camerawork in the world bar none, is being made with further enhancements that would involve a much greater ability to manipulate the camera - to enhance the cinematics so that you could, maybe, make your game of Shenmue completely unique to you - like making your own movie of the game. But that is the only way we could remotely link this idea to Shenmue, and I'm afraid they would have mentioned it.

Look, it's quite clear that not one of the ideas mentioned by SEGA involve any of their existing franchises, because they would have said so. (As they do with the Tsukurou sports thing.) After a very difficult year at which their showing at gameshows was notably disappointing, and with the ageing Sonic franchise clearly past its sell-by date, SEGA are looking to wow the world with some kick-ass new ideas. That is what this is about.

And does that mean they won't do anything for their existing games? Of course not! They have specifically made announcements about the termination of Crazy Taxi and of NiGHTS, but they have not said any such thing about Shenmue. Therein lies our greatest hope.

Wow, that's a good point. I never thought of that. I feel a little more optimistic now. :D
