Maybe not underground exactly. But these dark dancehall riddims on the mo' wax Now Thing compilation were straight up fire. All of which very under appreciated outside of Jamaica. You can hear the influence these sorts of riddims had on early Grime.
If you like your music underground and unappreciated and obscure do yourself a favour a listen to all the installments (there are four so far) of Edan's radio show. Fucking brill.
Hey lookit that, I actually have something to contribute to this topic finally.
Used to listen to this band a helluva lot back in the early-2000s. Well, more accurately I listened to the one solitary album of theirs that I had. They've never been mega-prolific, so despite being around since the late-90s, they've only put out two albums and a couple of EPs (which mostly just have earlier versions of their album songs, with a few exceptions). With such a small output, I'd kind of forgotten them over time until just recently when I started looking up their other stuff. Great shit if you're in the mood for some depressive-industrial-girly rock. Just such a strong goddamn voice on her, and I love how dark and depressed it all is. I just want to give her a damn hug. I don't come across ones like her very often, ones that actually make me feel the stuff they're singing about. This isn't one of those lame metal bands that just throws some pretty girl on vocals hoping for extra attention; she's there because she's genuinely excellent at what she's doing.
Just re-bought their first album and ordered whatever other stuff I could find. I imagine they're technically "disbanded" now, although they were never really big enough that any kind of announcement like that came out. I hope one day they put together some new songs. The girl is just too good, it seems a shame for her not to be continually putting out new material, and the rest of the band's style is just the perfect atmosphere for a voice like hers.
