Genius Music Moments in Films

Postby MiTT3NZ » Thu Jun 18, 2015 1:02 am

Scores and original music's all well and good, but a lot of films have those moments when they pull it out the bag with genius placement of an already existing song. So, what moments did you like the most?

Personally, for me, there isn't much that can top the Swamp Song in Snatch, but some have come pretty damn close. Love Me Again playing throughout the credits of Edge of Tomorrow somehow made me like the film - and song - a lot more than I probably should.

There are also a couple of moments in Love, Honour and Obey that also make use of an Oasis song (coz why wouldn't you?) Force of Nature. They for the scenes n the tone so well that you just have to take your hat off to the directors.

And of course 8 Mile. Opening with Shook Ones was a stroke of pure genius. Whatever you may think of the film, you can't deny that opening. Die Hard With a Vengeance was similar with using music as an instant impact, to a lesser extent.

Tryna think of more, but tired as fuck atm n sweating my bollocks off, so I'll probably thong more on it later n edit in some YouTube clips.

Queens "Who Wants To Live Forever" from Highlander immediately springs to mind.

Also another 80's classic The Karate KId's "Your The Best Around" montage always pumped me up as a kid, and still does now 8)

^^Pretty much the entirety of Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Kill Bill, definitely.
He kind of lost it with Django though. The music choices in that one were less-than-inspired.

The score for the film Malena is still one of my favorite film scores of all time, and one of its basic themes is a re-orchestration of an old 30s or 40s Italian love song cal Ma L'amore No. Seriously brilliant work by Ennio Morricone on this one, taking an established song and making it even better for the score.

I love the music in the hallucinatory sequences in Big Lebowski. Especially the one with "I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in".

Martin Scorsese used to be really good at these. Casino, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull come to mind where he punctuated a scene with extreme violence or shocks against very old swing music or rock 'n roll music.

I think a lot of people imitated that style after he did it.

I personally really like a good bit of Jamiroquai, and the sudden appearance of this song near the end of a movie whose soundtrack is otherwise all intentionally-poor 80s-ish keyboard stuff... yeah, it works.
The fact that it was eventually co-opted by hipster Hot Topic losers makes it easy to forget, but Napoleon Dynamite was pretty fucking great before all the idiot hooplah started.

Do covers count?

This scene sticks out in my mind from Buckaroo Banzai, with a cover of "Since I Don't I Have You" by The Skyliners

American Psycho. Especially the fucking Hip To Be Square scene, has me in stitches every time. One of my favourite films and the whole soundtrack is perfect.

It's the instrumental version of a cover but it's got to be one of the best scenes in film ever and a lot of that has to do with the music.

Personally, my favourite examples are Spoilers for Battle Royale incoming
Mitsuko's death
with the use of Bach's Air.

The Earth Angel scene in Back To The Future is something I find to be superb with how it manages to tell a whole story in the space of one two minute song with so much at stake, and that sweeping finale always makes me smile.

The future Council scene in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure always gets me as well, for some reason.

But perhaps one of, if not my favourite is from Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb. Just for the pure contrast of the song and the imagery.

This song matched the universe of The Matrix perfectly, IMO;

Also, Saturday Night Fever, the whole film pretty much. Though it probably wasn't that hard for the sountrack guys to stick some big disco tunes into a film largely about the escapades of some disco buddies. ;-)
