I've been watching the JapanesePod101 YouTube videos. They're pretty good but it's damn hard to concentrate on the more, ahem, "kawaii" videos...

Jim Jarmusch gets it.

So the new Bond theme song sucks. Bummer. I'm pretty damn excited for Spectre, so it's too bad they had to go with such a lame ass tune for it.
What's with these slow, plodding Bond themes they're going with now? That Adele one was similarly boring when that came out (even though Skyfall was really good). Of course, even the one right before that was pretty bad too, despite not necessarily being slow (I love Jack White, but that pairing with Alicia Keys was just... bleh; maybe Jack White by himself would have been better).
It's like, after Chris Cornell fucking nailed it with his theme for Casino Royale (the best Bond theme and the best Bond movie in my eyes), they just haven't figured out how to follow up with another great song.

Damn that sucks. I'm still going to try and avoid hearing the song until I'm sitting in front of the opening credits sequence, but now I'm tempted to know what you're talking about.

Would you rate it better or worse than Skyfall?

I'd personally rate it worse. Skyfall's theme wasn't terrible or anything, it was just kind of boring. But at the very least, it had some of that Adele style jazziness to it, which is okay. It fits the basic mythos at least.
The new one is by Sam Smith; I'm guessing the Brits around here might know who he is, but I'd seriously never heard of him before this. And aside from the fact that it's boring as hell, the tune itself sounds more like it was written for a woman to sing, rather than some male pop star. Because of that, it just has kind of a weird vibe to it; it doesn't feel like it reflects anything to do with 007 at all. In my mind, good Bond themes fit into two basic categories: female-sung ones that reflect some of the intended sexiness of the stories, or male-sung ones that reflect some of the badassitude of Bond himself (which is exactly why Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" is so fucking good). In this case though, it's like we have the intention of the first category, but with a man singing. And it just feels... weird. A man probably shouldn't be trying to sound sexy in a theme for a flick about a misogynist spy/assassin.
Basically, if I hear a Bond theme and can't imagine that James Bond himself would like it, then there's something wrong.

Chris Cornell's one was a good'un, agreed!

Sam Smith is a "modern pop sensation", a sort of of-the-moment type of character. I don't hate his music or anything, but he's nothing special. Not heard the theme yet, but having heard nothing but bad stuff from everyone who's heard it, I haven't bothered to click any link!

The thing with Bond films though, is they have a big build up intro scene before the 007 stereotyping with him shooting the screen etc., so it's like they do their best to make sure you hear their shite song!

Also, anyone who is old enough to remember Shooting Stars:

Do any of you think of "Club singing with Vic and Bob" when they hear Adele's Skyfall?

I just heard it myself. It's boring as shit.

At least the Brosnan ones, including that hyper-poppy Madonna song, had energy. The right kind of energy. Cornell's contribution was very good, I agree.

Maybe I'm just getting older, but I really don't care for fanservice in anime anymore.

Yeah, that teenager has giant breasts, I get it. Get back to the story, please.

Chris Cornell's song is awesome, but the best Bond theme IMO is Paul McCartney's Live and Let Die!
