I'm loving it, it feels old (and it kinda is), but there's so much charm it's just lovely. Not really new to yakuza (played 3, a bit of 4, and around half of 1), but this one feels more snappier and fast paced than others.

The sidequests are mostly hilarious (and after playing FFXV it just reflects how better they are), the humor is spot on, the story is a little cliched but majima is just a great character.

I don't know how the game can flow from being super serious, to batshit crazy, to soap opera, to funny, to pervy in a couple of minutes, and it just navigates it like nothing. I don't know if it's the language barrier (though deadly premonition was dubbed and also did this), or the style of japanese comedy/over the top stuff that just makes you go "ok".

Specially with a lot of games lacking humor, this is just great (I'm still not really sold on the gameplay).

Just revisiting Yakuza 4 for some sidequests today and I was laughing my ass off when I stumbled across this:

Image

A Shenmue reference?! I had no idea about this if true! Kazuma is reading the cover of a porno-dvd that some ex-yakuza scrubs gave him (to which he reads what's shown in the above image). Oh devs, thank you for not forgetting your roots...

Really looking forward to getting a ps4 and playing Yakuza 0 in a couple of months from now.

That was funny. I also assumed Saejima's alias name of 'Suzuki' to be a reference to the obvious, but apparently it's a very common name in Japan. Incidentally, in one of Kiryu's sub stories when you choose which name for someone's baby, I named it Ryo

But there's definitely a reference to Yu Suzuki in Yakuza Zero and I'll be damned if anyone tells me otherwise! I've spoiler tagged it below..

In Majima's sub story you infiltrate a cult to find a mother's long lost daughter and try to convince her to come home. The cult leader looks to me like Yu Suzuki. When you come to fight him he even uses Shun Di's fighting style from Virtua Fighter..

Yu Suzuki leading a cult of fans you say? Shenmue 3 confirmed!

Despite my dislike of no dub, i still bought Yakuza 0 since its getting so much hype (jim sterling, angry joe) and i can see why some ppl really like it. It can be kinda fun sometimes but... this really isn't scratching my Shenmue itch...

Extremely combat focused which shenmue wasn't. Not really many times where the game encourage me to explore the world like Shenmue did unless, you count the side quest but even then it's not the same, some of these side quest really go in a super goofy direction which isn't something for me. The game not being 100 percent voice acted really threw me off at first considering is a modern game. It also shows just how ahead of its time shenmue was.
I like the characters and they really look realistic. The 60fps makes it super smooth.

I'm so glad s3 is coming so i will get that scratch soon enough but yeah.... not a bad game but it isn't for me.

I feel like i'm really gonna start disliking when people compare it to Shenmue now when it's mostly trying to do its own thing.

You bought in the "Yakuza is Shenmue but COOlleR". Yakuza Charm is that is full of charm and part of that was the contemporary japanese location, Shenmue was more.

It's not the same deal by far and don't think any game has that vibe (right now), it was also a product of it's time, you can see people headbutting walls with the waiting, writing and pacing.

There are things here and there, routines of NPCs in WRPGs, sparkling some action stuff inbetween adventure games, QTEs, Closed "open world" stuff like mass effect tried to do...

But the only thing that had that Shenmue feel was deadly premonition and maybe shadow of memories. Yakuza does takes the approach of "stuff that happens upon", but in Shenmue was a sidenote (or a main plot you were looking around and felt exited to actually trigger).

Actually I'm playing Torment tides of numenera, and was a little bit of that approach of "the world is what kinda matters" (while doing what Shenmue doesn't do, of "doing your character" to have different outcomes).

Yes, Shenmue is FUCKING UNIQUE, and that's pretty much why we all are on this fucking forum.

I'm quite exited to see how Shenmue III will turn out, and has been quite a joy seen newcomers (even if they don't like it) interact with it.

Since I'm on the Zelda mood, I'll say that they contrast amazingly well, Shenmue is about knowing your sorroundings, while Zelda is overcoming them, Shenmue is the story first, Zelda is the "challenge" first, Zelda is a means to exploration, and Shenmue is the meaning behind exploration.

It will also be fun, looking how a guy like Yu will take a problem that FF took, and that nintendo is taking (like old times let's say lol).

GIVE THAT GUY MORE WHISKEY !

Finished the game. After almost 120 hours of playtime, I'm done with my first playthrough. What a masterpiece! Truly one of the system-defining titles for the PS4 in my opinion. I'm definitely gonna do a new game+ at some point down the line, probably when Kiwami has arrived in the West.

And what kind of awesome, batshit crazy, motherfucker is Majima?! He totally stole the show from Kiryu in this game!
I also found Majima's Hostess Club mini game more fun than Kiryu's real estate mini game.

And the sidequests once again absolutely hit the spot! :rotflmao:

The cult sidequest with Majima: "Shooreh-pipi!" or the "buy a porn magazine for a little boy" with Kiryu. Or the one where Kiryu gets "raped" by an older woman whom he mistakes for his date's mom and when they're coming out of the love hotel she goes "Goodbye, toy boy!" :lmfao:

Overall this game also had one of the most enjoyable fighting systems I've seen in an adventure game. I also loved the final cutscene
when Majima puts on his insane grin and goes "Kiryu-chan!".

He's not crazy anything, in Kiwami.

He just shows up in a bunch of weird places and attires, that's all I'll say (you'll have to see for yourself!).

Slot cars and Mushi King are miles better in Kiwami than 0, but I found 0 to be the better title all-around.

Kind of in a transition part of my life right now and gaming is not a part of it, thus I haven't spend a second on 6 yet, but when I do, I'll report in.

I really would like to import the US version of this game but shipping and customs on top of it... I'm not sure. Money's a little tight at the moment.

Maybe I'll just have to buy the European version this time. But I absolutely don't want a Deep Silver logo on my game and since Deep Silver are now publishing Sega's physical releases in Europe this could be a problem?

Has anyone here bought the European version? What does it look like? Is there only a Sega logo on the cover or does it say Deep Silver?

As Yakuza 6 is partly set in Hiroshima I hope it will have some references to batlles without honour or humanity. I would seriously disappointed if they have the game in that setting with no reference to the biggest yakuza classics of all time.
