Just finished Thief 2. Well, mostly. It felt like the game was needlessly padding things near the end (same level twice in a row with different objectives? Ugh...), so I skipped one of the levels.
Either way, it was great going back to the gameplay of the original with content I hadn't played before. Strange to think that as big a fan as I am of the series, I had only beaten the first and third games before, and only a few levels of the second. It came out at a time when I was at the mercy of my parents to buy me games, so Thief 2 ended up being skipped, and the only exposure I got to it was a demo and a few levels at a friend's house.
Anyway, as nice as it was to finally get to play it, I do feel that the game is inferior to the first. The atmosphere in most areas just isn't as effective, and it had this odd habit in a few places of giving you a really obtuse objective that forces you to re-scour these immense levels just so you can end the mission. I don't remember the first game being quite like that and last I played it was only about a year ago, so my memory can't be all that foggy.
It also isn't as scary as the first. The original game had the Bonehoard, the Haunted Cathedral, the Lost City... places inhabited by zombies, ghosts, and monsters, and littered with traps and whatnot. The atmosphere was thick as hell in places like that, and it was genuinely difficult and challenging. Thief 2 felt a lot tamer in that regard. Not to mention that the overall story felt a bit grander in the first, with Garret essentially challenging a god/demon at the end, rather than some Hammerite reject. The Mechanists were pussies.
I guess when all is said and done, it was satisfying to finally get to play the game, and I certainly enjoyed it, but it was a bit of a disappointment in some regards. Of course, that's after having built it up in my mind for over a decade, so take from that what you will.
On that note, if the new Thief doesn't have Hammerites, zombies, or Pagans, I'm definitely going to be disappointed.
On to Dishonored tomorrow, if I get the time.
