Thousand White meaning

Postby Spokane » Fri Mar 23, 2012 7:29 pm

So all the quarter and area names in this game are fairly obvious and easy to figure out what inspired the name.

Workers Pier is a communist Chinese inspired name and a main hub for you guessed it, Workers. Fortunes Pier is your average Chinese traditional name in a sense.
Green Market Quarter is where most the grocers and vegetable and meat stands are. Lucky Charm is Irish inspired in a way but has Chinese connections too. South Carmain is just a name. etc.

But there is one I don't quite get. Thousand White Quarter, its the only one who's name I don't get or understand what it means.

I don't think it necessarily has a meaning itself. It's just a name. Just like street names over here in the US are such nonsense, but you don't see anything on each one of those streets that represents the name in any way :p

I doubt Worker's Pier is communist inspired either. it's just a pier for workers lol. I wouldn't look too much into these places, they're just names.

I agree with TomCat. They probably just chose to translate the characters literally instead of romanizing it because that sounds a lot more interesting and mysterious to our western ears than the Chinese/Japanese gobbledygook that would result from a transliteration.

My dad is the one that pointed that out to me, the Communist put more value in the thought of working than your average cultures to emphasis that the people work as one for the whole of the country.

So it doesn't mean anything. It does sound cool sort of. But it just makes no sense.

 One of the main streets in my neighborhood is "A" Street. And there is a "C" Street and "G" Street too.

I was going to say but decided not to until now, because of Ryudo, that it might mean a Thousand White hoes.

It is the answer to an ancient Chinese riddle: How many barbarians does it take to screw in a light bulb?

None. They didn't exist in ancient China

In fact, it's written as "白千" in Chinese letters that means "white thousand."
As some of you remember, "white" represents "west" according to the Chinese constellations:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Symbo ... stellation)

Thousand White Bldg. is located in the west of the Yellow Head Bldg, as you know. Actually, there're some other names in Kowloon which represent four directions; such as Blue Dragon Garden in the east, Black Heaven Bldg. in the north, etc.

I'm not quite sure why they added "thousand" after "white," but "千" which could mean "numerous" is often used in Chinese, as it somewhat has auspicious connotation.

Because you actually learn something from them. I didn't know the Chinese corresponded directions with colors. And the explanation for the thousand makes sense too.

The game says that about the 4 cardinal points-animals-colors. Well, that's something I knew from a long time ago. Maybe I did read it here.
