Shenmue 1 Undub 99min CD01 for Dreamcast

I tried for the last time to mod free.afs and it resulted in a crash!

Only thing so far that has worked is: JP Speech & JP Subs, ENG Subs when NPC is silent...

I have decided to remove the free quest speech because it is too confusing with the mix of JP Speech, JP/ENG Subs.

Now all free quest speech will be silent and all NPCs will use ENG subs.

Also this will allow me to use all other data in the game so no need for 99min versions.

The cinematics work perfectly JP Speech, ENG Subs..

I will try and mod the few incompatible cinematics that are left for undub also.

So far there is only 5 incompatible cinematics on cd1, and 1 incompatible cinematic on cd2.

Update:

I got CD1 and CD2 completed with undub!
The selfboots are now the actual PAL versions with nothing removed except the free quest speech.
This is good for many reasons...1) No need for 99min versions, 2) You can easily transfer saves to shenmue 2 pal,
3) All of the NPCs will now use ENG subs. <---(thanks to mue 26, and FamilyGuy for making me realize this was needed.)
It is alot easier to play the game when you know wtf is going on lol.
Instead of using that odd hybrid JP speech/JP subs & sometimes ENG subs I had working on the old version.

I also have a few of the incompatible cinematics working now.
Hopefully I can get the rest of them modded??
I might add cdda to the selfboots at a later date? I hear the cdda is only used on shenmue passport?

Consider my first undub releases to be BETAs/proof of concept. (80min and 99min)
I will try and get the old versions removed eventually.
If they can't be removed, so be it.

I really like the jp speech in shenmue 1, it adds so much to the game.
Seriously, I never knew how much better the japanese voice acting was in shenmue.
Compared to the bad english voice acting.
There really is no comparison...the japanese voice acting is the way to play shenmue.

Once everything is complete I will upload all of the undub disks together.
I am not really motivated enough to start on cd3 yet.

I have a few other things I have been working on that are shenmue related also...
Maybe I can get all of it released at the same time??

Update:

Great news.
I finally figured out howto get the free quest completely working with undub.
It takes alot more time to get free.afs to work correctly.
It was a bit tricky...but, it works!

Undub FREE QUEST:
All of the NPC's use ENG subs. (NO JP Subs are used)
Some of the NPC's are silent. (when NPC is silent ENG subs are still used)
When the NPC's use speech it is JP.

I have to get a few more of the incompatible cinematics to work with undub on CD1.
After that it will be a FULL Undub version of Shenmue 1 on CD1.

Actually, I am quite a noob. There are alot of ppl here that far surpass anything that I could ever do. I find the same thing in the dreamcast community...alot of ppl have much more skills than I will ever have. Thanks to some of these ppl in the dc community, I have learned alot about making dreamcast isos.

Update:

CD1 and CD2 are now complete.

FULL Undub, fixed the remaining incompatible cinematics, both disks are now PAL, added cdda, dummy files, all original PAL files (NO coca-cola mod added), so far nothing has been removed from the game.

Notes:

The 2 incompatible cinematics that did not have required japanese speech files for the ENG subs are now SILENT. The cinematics will still use ENG subs. There is no way to fix this!

The other 3 incompatible cinematics are now JP speech with ENG subs.

Only part of game that cannot be modded for undub are the BATTLE QTE scenes. There is no way to fix this!

When an NPC is silent (in cinematic, or free quest) it is because the afs did not have required japanese speech files for the ENG subs... There is no way to fix this!

Either way everything is working with undub now... this makes Shenmue 1 more enjoyable to hear jp voice acting, and see the eng subs on screen.

I might start on CD3 later tonight? maybe tomorrow?

On another note, I have a few ideas about a possible repack of the Full English Speech versions of Shenmue 2. Maybe another method to increase the quality of speech files used. I will attempt this sometime in the future. I see it taking up alot of time, and no way to know if it will work without trying.

Also I finished 2 other selfboots for some dreamcast Shenmue related stuff.
More than likely only the fans of shenmue will care about.

Will keep you updated on progress.

Update:

Ok, I almost lost it last night. While working on cd3 and remaking cd1-2. I thought the Full English Speech mod was way too much work! haha! This project is pure hell... the definition of insanity.

Example:
FREE QUEST JP - 20,000+ files each disk
FREE QUEST PAL - 9,000+ files each disk
Cinematics - almost 30 total incompatible archives from all disks cd1-3 (maybe 300+ more files)
Incompatible cinematics have to be modified to get them to work!
FREE AFS 1-3 has to be modified to get it to work. (the process is entirely borked!)

I have remade the undub selfboots of cd1-cd2 maybe 20 times now...
At first I was manually editing the cinematics...
I finally wrote a few batch scripts to handle some of the data.
I now have compiled scripts for the free quest data, and the cinematics.
Even with batch scripts there is still much work that you must do manually.
The AFSUTIL tool that is available to extract, and archive .afs helps... but, that is only a small part of the process.
I get so close to being finished with this undub project.
Then I find something new that I could improve and fix etc. ffs

Here is the current status of the project:

FREE Quest is complete for cd1-3.
Cinematics cd1-3 (30 archives, 300+ files to fix)
All other Cinematics cd1-3 are complete.
Coca Cola mod for each disk is complete.
Custom sort order for each disk is complete.
Binhack for cdda for each disk is complete.

The Shen FULL undub is 95% complete.

Real life stuff has been getting in the way.
When the shen undub is complete, I will have a few extra Shenmue .cdi's to upload.

Ya, I pulled the shen undub CD1 off of isozone because that is an older version that had borked FREE QUEST speech.
The older version had a mix of JP/ENG subs and JP voices.
Now I have FREE QUEST working with ENG subs and JP speech (silent when there are no compatible speech files).

Yes, I am still working on this project.

I have redone alot of the work on it so far.
I did a file comparison on all of the unarchived .afs from PAL and JP.
It will be more than 5 hours to finish the shen undub project!
