EA voted the 'worst company in America" [again]

Postby Who Really Cares? » Sat Apr 06, 2013 4:13 am

EA chief operating officer Peter Moore has responded to over a quarter million voters naming EA the "worst company in America" for the second year in a row on Consumerist's annual poll.

Moore brushed off most of these accusations as generic internet rage over whatever's popular and noted that much of this negativity emanated from conservative organisations urging users to vote against EA due to its LGBT-friendly policies.

"We're seeing posts on conservative web sites urging people to protest our LGBT policy by voting EA the Worst Company in America," said Moore in a statement. "That last one is particularly telling. If that's what makes us the worst company, bring it on. Because we're not caving on that."

That being the case, Moore admitted that the publisher has made several mistakes over the last year. "I'll be the first to admit that we've made plenty of mistakes," said Moore. "These include server shut downs too early, games that didn't meet expectations, missteps on new pricing models and most recently, severely fumbling the launch of SimCity. We owe gamers better performance than this."

Moore went on to defend several of EA's policies that he felt were misunderstood.

"Many continue to claim the Always-On function in SimCity is a DRM scheme. It's not. People still want to argue about it. We can't be any clearer - it's not. Period," he stated.

"Some claim there's no room for Origin as a competitor to Steam. 45 million registered users are proving that wrong," he added.

Moore also claimed that tens of millions of players are loving the publisher's outpouring of free-to-play titles, despite the model drawing some ire from a certain type of gamer.

The exec noted that while EA botched Sim City's launch, over 900,000 players accepted a free game as an apology.

"We can do better. We will do better," Moore stated. "But I am damn proud of this company, the people around the globe who work at EA, the games we create and the people that play them."

I like how he always uses Origin numbers but leaves out the part that they force it on people. Even console gamers need an account to play EA games online.

Shock! But then if you didn't cock up SC so badly you would never have had to offer a free game.

Peter Moore...the former Sega employee who cancelled Shenmue II for North American Dreamcast owners. Which resulted in everyone importing the PAL release.

Sorry Peter but that has nothing to do with why your company sucks, and why its been named the worst company in america 2 years running. EA legitimately is a shitty company, just face it, resign now while you still can, not saying EA is going to sink but just to save face and reputation, too much blood on their hands.

Don't worry. I'm sure Moore will always land on his feet, no matter what becomes of EA. They could burn in flames and he could find something else to swear fealty to. He keeps his allegiances "fluid".

To be fair, he's probably right. If you get enough like-minded nerds with no lives together to vote on an internet poll, they'll swarm the thing and make sure their opinion comes out as the winner (or, in this case, the loser).

I've seen the same thing happen before, years back on some internet poll for an MTV show, asking users to vote on the best metal video of the year. Naturally, one would assume that with an American show centered around metal, you'd end up with some generic "long-hair and grunty-vocals" American band coming out on top.
But, lo and behold, it was an internet poll, where you could vote as many times as you wanted.
So, obviously, it ended up with a shit-ton of unreasonably passionate nerds voting over and over for the most unlikely of candidates: a Japanese visual kei band. As much as I actually love the band, the truth is that their western fans are primarily internet dorks with a lot of time on their hands.
So it wasn't necessarily a matter of this band's video being the most popular of the candidates listed; they just happened to have the most fans of the "internet nerd" variety. And thus, they came out on top.

I don't see it as being any different here. EA clearly isn't the worst company in America. There are so many other companies to take into account when voting on something like that.
But there are still an asslode of dorky videogame fans out there who hate EA, so when they find out about an internet poll gauging the worst company in America... they'll come out in force and try to make EA look as bad as possible.
It's pathetic as hell, but I don't doubt at all that this is the case.

Cant argue with that. If it was worst games company then yes but surely company in general has to be the banks.
