Yu Suzuki Interview with Strana Igr

(Chapter 7 and beyond)

If it's legit then presumably something will appear on YSNet-inc.jp sooner or later. I do hope it's true, because even if he doesn't get the chance to make Shenmue 3 I'd like to see Yu restore his reputation and be able to retire without Sega's abandonment of his crown jewel being the last thing anyone remembers of his illustrious career.

Of course if it's just another mobile game then no one will give it a second look.

I really want Shenmue III if this news is true it looks like we will never get Shenmue III. Shenmue III requires a lot of investment to put in production and I don't think any company is going to take that risk. I'm sad now I always had some hope that we will Shenmue III.

I agree of course. But I can't help but be sceptical. Both about the prospect of this prospective open world fantasy game turning out well, and the fact that this is real. I do hope for both of course though. I don't think this signals the death of any hope for Shenmue 3 as Intruder seems to be suggesting. If this is real, this could even help enable Shenmue 3, as LGS suggests.

The following was taken from a user post at Shenmue500k.

There is some stuff about some new fantasy rpg fom Yu, he only told that events wont happen in China or Japan, and he`s inspired art stile (desing) from artist Alphonse Mucha, and its far from announcement, and only scenery and music are made yet..

Yeah, its the exclusive interview for russian jornalists for that magazine.

There also was question about Shenmue 3, Yu said nothing new, but but journalists saw a folder named Shemue 3 on his laptops desktop.

Holy....
So this could be real. A spirtual spin-off.. I dont even know how to feel about it if its true. Seems like thats the only thing he could do right now though considering the rights of Shenmue.

I would say while it is not confirmed I want to provide a theory (following my previous post) just for the thinking procedure that is being caused by it, but it is confirmed, therefore let us sum up what we already know, so as we will end up with a somehow close answer about what is that game Yu Suzuki is working on right now.

A while back, when Yu Suzuki was in Monaco, «Yu-san took a tour of Côte d'Azur on March 1st».

There, he met with «Go Nagai, a famous animator, and the tour guide».

Image

And what he wanted to do there...

As he wanted to stroll some old village with an ambience that would be suitable for a game, the guide took him to Dolceacqua. He liked the village very much and took a lot of pictures.

Some day, we might stroll an old village like this in some video game. ;-)

(Text highlighting is mine)

This is all «according to the following facebook page in Japanese». I have put a comment there, where I ask if «this is the place were Yu Suzuki's next game is going to be?»

[Source, by Kiyuu: http://www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=45589&start=225#p1036674]

I'll restate my reaction:
Giorgio wrote:Personally, these are the most inspirational news I have read lately. I automatically-associated them with the fact that Yu Suzuki did research back then for Shenmue and visit places regarding the game, like he (somehow) did now. It may be for something different to Shenmue, but it is good to know that Yu still has the spirit in him.

Ergo! For one, we somehow know where the setting of this game is going to be and somehow what the style of this game is.

shenhaZ wrote:— And what you will do with the Shenmue-series now, if you had freedom to do whatever you want?

— Actually, I'm doing it. I took the best that was in Shenmue, all the «know-how» of the game, gave up all that I did not like and make a new project. Only this will be a fantasy setting. That is not China or Japan, but the new fantasy world. * shows the concept art *

http://translate.google.ru/translate?sl ... ml&act=url

Let's see what this says:

- I have heard it before, but I believe this is *not* a spiritual successor to Shenmue. What I mean is, this is not like Mighty No. 9 of Keiji Inafune; that means, you will not see the protagonist of that new game as a similar figure of Ryo Hazuki, with the same attributes et cetera, nor his name will be exempli gratia Ai C No. 3. As Yu Suzuki says, that new game inherits only the «know-how», the formula, while keeping what is best and disregarding what he didn't like. In a few words, the open-world formula (and some other things of Shenmue's gameplay and systems) will be the same, but nor the story nor the characters nor the world, of Shenmue.

- Yu-san says «a fantasy setting ... new fantasy world». The word fantasy prevails. We have already conclude where Yu took inspiration about what this new fantasy world would look like, and this will be like "Dolceacqua". But, by fantasy, you could expect also something futuristic. Or, better, you could expect a world with a setting like e.g. the one that is being used in Pokemon X/Y; that is the world is called Kalos, but Kalos is inspired by / based on Paris, France.

UPDATE:
phpBB [video]

As we can see in this video, we have more serious reasons to consider that this new game project by Yu, would be an RPG. Shenmue wasn't exactly an RPG (as you remember its motto "RPG has changed"), but rather exactly a Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment game; we can even say that new project could be a mix between RPG and FREE.

A few questions to consider:
- What things do you think Yu Suzuki didn't like in Shenmue?
I have a hunch that Quick Timer Events is one thing...
- What do you think about Go Nagai?
I would speculate he will be the one responsible for the concept art of that new game and also providing his expertise on animations. Go Nagai Industries...
- Would Yu consider Kickstarter to fund that new game, like Inafune did, so as it would have the potential to come out on all major consoles?

Furthermore, new things could come out of this new interview of Yu Suzuki, by «russian magazine a "strana igr" and russian version of ign» (source: post)...

...but we would need somehow to translate the interview of that magazine. Someone who can read Russian and willing to do it...

Also, I wonder if this, the «Relation» bit, has anything to do with that new project of his. It is clear that this slide refers to Yu's innovations and things that he have implemented in his games (like e.g. Network with Shenmue Gai, Virtua Fighter Cool Champ), but the Relation is set to 2015, therefore we may see a new innovative system of Yu on that new project and in 2015...

But who can read Chinese? Seriously, I can translate it, but don't expect it too soon. There's 8 pages(including pictures) and no much time.

Great post, Giorgio.

A couple of people have offered to translate the article, but the more the merrier, because any differences between them will identify possible inaccuracies or ambiguities which can then be investigated, allowing us to be more confident in the final result.

Glad to see Yu working on something. I'll be more than happy to purchase whatever game he ends up making. However, this doesn't hurt nor help any chances of Shenmue III. I'm quite sure if Yu Suzuki was asked to make Shenmue III, he'll put his current project on halt to go forth with the project that will help him make the most money.

Making Shenmue III will do more to help Yu Suzuki's credibility than making a new game. Because at the end of the day, regardless of what Yu Suzuki makes going forward. We still want to know what happens in Shenmue III. He will continue to get asked about Shenmue until the day he dies if he doesn't make the game.

First two pages, I skipped intro part. Also, I'll probably need someone to edit text.
I want to make translation as close as possible, and actually it is my first translation attempt from Russian.., so you know... :D

Title: Yu Suzuki Makes games about what he likes.
(The second detailed interview to western press, Strana Igr(Gameland) Exclusive.
We avoid the obvious questions, and trying to find out things that game designer never told anyone before!)

...Yu Suzuki glad, relaxes and ready to answer frankly to our questions, not how Japanese developers usually speaking with western press
I'm asking, how development of Virtua Fighter started, and how was it, to make first world 3D fighting game?

Yu Suzuki answering: Back then, 2D-fightings, like Street Fighter 2 was popular. 3D graphic in games was very primitive. You could only make models from triangles, that doesn't even had textures. And because of that 3D-characters resembled robots. There's wasn't opportunity to make graphics really beautiful, and because of that I decided to spend all my efforts to make character movements correct and realistic. Street Fighter had nice sprites, but we had very smooth movements and 60 frames per second. To make all animation looks right, I made all my designers take lessons of martial arts. Cause if they can't imagine how it's looks like in real life, they won't be able to draw and model it ! And it's important not only for designers. We gathered all our workers at office and created a real martial arts tournament. We gave a job to people who showed themselves at good side , and others was left with paperwork. I myself went to China, to learn martial arts, and tried all these punches and kicks myself. And because Street Fighter was very beautiful game, I decided to concentrate all my efforts on realism.

The answer probably will wonder a lot people in Russia, cause we have it's like: 3D, technologically cool graphics – this is good, and simple sprites – it is all in past century. Remember, how peoples criticized Duke 3D compared to Quake. But from Yu Suzuki's point of view polygonal graphic isn't main advantage. Rather, it's created additional problems

Yu Suzuki continued: We was making something new, something that nobody tried before, and because of that we had a lot of troubles. For example, programmers never worked on 3D games before. And even graphic designers for different requests, answered: “It's not part of my job!”. So I had no other choice but teach and explain everything to people I had at company and who was willing to work. And by the way telling them, that right now maybe it's not part of your job, but in future there's will be more and more work with 3D, and because of that, just for yourself it would be useful to know how it's works. Cause, anyway, sooner or later you will have to. And as you see, back then I was right.
