Shenmue running on Reicast (Dreamcast emulator for Android)

Postby Ziming » Thu Jan 02, 2014 4:57 pm

This video has Shenmue being played on a Samsung Galaxy S4 i9500. The game still has graphical glitches, but runs fairly smooth. The team working on the emulator says it will be fixed in the R6 release.

Seems to run pretty good by the looks of the footage. Though Ryo's eyes do look strange and there are some other slight graphical hiccups. I have a i9505 S4 and I'd love to try this out but I guess it will only run on rooted devices...

Well I've tried it out just now and to my surprise it runs without any tampering with the phone. Just loaded the app from the store, created a folder for the BIOS and loaded up an image of the Japanese Disc 1 that I have lying around on a flash drive.

It does start up and it does run pretty fast and stable. About 70-80% of the time I got full speed.
The controlls do work but it's pretty clumsy to move Ryo with the virtual touchscreen controller.
What really nice is that you can easily use controllers with this emulator. The video already shows this with a bluetooth controller. I'm using a DualShock 3 that's hooked up through a USB OTG adaptor and it works great!
Besides the select button acting as the start button the controls are identical to a dreamcast controller.
Even the analog stick works perfectly.

One thing that's really annoying, the emulator doesn't tell the display to stay on while it's running and thus the screen will lock after the set time and turn the emulator off. At that point it shuts down completely and you have to reload the image file again. So if you have to lock your phone you'll lose all progress. They really have to address that issue quick!

In the end it's ultimately playable though and a damn impressive thing if you think about it.
The original Shenmue on a mobile phone!

But now comes the big problem... The emulator doesn't really seem to like the Adreno 320 that the i9505 S4 variant uses. It doesn't look nearly as good as in the video with the i9500. The graphics are... well look for yourself:

Why would you ever need to root to run a game emulator?

I read "Shenmue racist" first. I glanced too quickly there I guess.

It was just a guess because I know that certain things like DualShock 3 or WiiMote Bluetooth apps need a rooted device, at least when you want to use it on a Galaxy S4. I assumed that such an advanced emulator might need that too.

Anyway, I'm hoping they improve the compability soon. I'd really love to acutally properly play Shenmue on my phone.
Would also be a great thing to carry around. Got in a gaming discussion where you mention Shenmue and the other side doesn't know the game? Just show it off on your phone! 8)

I have an Alcatel and the intro runs almost perfectly but when the actual game starts it freezes. The emulator is a pretty cool thing and not even bad for the alpha. just awesome.

Reicast finally received an update and is now running very good on my Galaxy S4 I-9505.

The graphical glitches with Shenmue are gone, the game now actually looks like it's supposed to and still runs at full speed at almost all times. There are some minor glitches on Ryos eyelids and mouth but it still looks awesome on the screen and is fully playable.

The emulator itself has been updated quite a bit aswell. You now have a couple of options for sound and graphics. It even was a widescreen mode like nullDC now but it doesn't work well with Shenmue. The button interface has been updated aswell and looks much nicer now.

Unfortunately I can't take screenshots of game footage. For some reason all the screenshots are just a black to grey gradiant from the background I guess.

I have shenmue working on my galaxy note 3 non rooted and version r6 and playing with my wired xbox 360 controller no problem :),wide screen actually works quite well but doesn't while it loads the next scenes in also you can screen shot from the emulator whilst playing I think it's the printer icon if I remeber correctly.
Been testing the latest beta releases aswell but no luck loading the maps in for some reason I enter the area code and press start the background pauses for a second and doesn't load the scene any ideas why this may be ??
