I had a dream last night that I was in an arcade. I was having a conversation with the owner, telling him that I think someone is following me. Just as I ask him if he knows who it is, I get cut off mid-sentence by some bald freak jumping on my neck. His eyes went red as well :/

Then I woke up. Amazing how that arcade scene spooks me to this day

Back then, when I was looking at Chai's face, I had all the goosebumps, heart pumping, trembling, hands sweating and all. One of the most frightening things I needed to bear looking at, while playing Shenmue. Nowadays, I've get used to his face, that I even have him as my avatar (just for fun) in another community...

I don't remember that Chai ever really creeped me out. And nowadays I find him to be rather amusing overall. Especially when he stuffs the ticket into his flithy mouth.

Worry not, young pawnskipper. For I know the secret. Map forward plus kick ( -> A assuming A is kick ) to the right trigger and just spam it. Then if he slips between your legs, just regular kick. Ryo will right himself while also kicking him in the head.

I really wish we got the boat chapter at the start of Shenmue 2 so that kid me knew that Chai was gone for good. Every time the camera panned out during a cutscene I expected that little freak to be lurking in the shadows.

A funny story actually. The young me thought the voice of the Myna bird (on the Japanese dub) was Chai. I heard that voice whilst I was scanning through that casette tape looking for clues on Yuanda Zhu's whereabouts and I just freaked out. On my first playthrough I literally watched every cutscene through my fingers waiting for that fucker to pop out, eyes bulging.

I dont think Chai is that creepy. Paul Lucas did a fantastic job on his voice though.

I've always found him charming and adorable, not scary by any means, I really like Chai.

Chai terrified me when I first played Shenmue.

He reminds me so much of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings and vice versa.

I remember playing the arcade scene in the middle of the night for the first time and it definitely freaking me out. The voice actor really nailed his persona. And he is like an older gollum to me lol

Ive spoken to Paul Lucas before about his portrayal of Chai (he is also Lan Di). lol, yeah he really did do a great job voicing him. I don't remember what his inspiration was though.
