Do you think Ryo will actually kill Lan Di?

Do you think Ryo will actually kill Lan Di?

Postby SelfActualized » Mon Jun 22, 2015 11:32 pm

Suzuki-san and wiser / older characters of the Shenmue series have hinted that this isn't necessarily a game about revenge as much as it about a young man's personal growth. With that said, watching his father get killed by Lan Di is what drives Ryo to embark on his journey. After Ryo speaks with Yuanda Zhu we find out more about Lan Di (like his real name, his father's connection to Iwao) and how Lan Di in his own way was seeking vengeance for the murder of his own father (which he believes Iwao is responsible for).

With the progression of the story and what has been hinted at by Yu Suzuki, do you think Ryo will allow Lan Di to survive?

Only time will tell, but I don't think he should kill Lan Di. He needs to be the bigger man, and not continue a cycle of evil. Only the strong can forgive, and Ryo will have his chance to prove that.

got be some reason for ryo to forgive ,like landi's father was killed by ryo's father in fact ,so landi was just doing his revenge .

in china, one popular sentence said "hate generates revenge ,then revenge generates hate ,that keeps this cycle never stop .when is the time for all to be over ?"

shenmue is telling the theory .

It could be an interesting dynamic if we find out later in the story that Lan Di has a son, biological or adopted, that you learn about, maybe even befriend. It would bring perspective to Ryo when it comes time to decide if it's right to kill him. There also seems to be stuff going on with Ryo internally when he gets to mainland China, as if he's "finding himself" so to speak. Maybe he'll simply mature to the point where he doesn't feel a need to kill Lan Di, child present or not.

Either way, there is only one way to find out.

Nah. He'll lay the beat down on him. And then just before the killing blow he'll have a change of heart.

Personally, I'm not sure yet. I don't think killing him, in pure revenge mode, will suffice, so something I'd hope it's something better. Not killing him is an option, but that again could be... not so good, especially if not done right. Then there's always killing by mistake.

All that said, which wasn't much, I think I'd prefer something along the lines of Kill Bill.

As far as we know Lan Di might be the good guy.

We know he killed Iwao because he thinks he killed his father, also Yuanda Zhu says those were Zhao's mirrors.

Maybe he just got into the chi you men to get revenge (like Ziming).

You kill someone, you're not a good guy. :)

Well, Iwao apparently killed someone and he seems like a nice guy. Also Ryo is not looking for Lan Di to give him hugs.

And he even had the courtesy to allow him to die like a warrior !

I thought you'd get a choice near the end, Shenhua probably jumps in and tries to plead with you and you have to decide whether or not you take her advice or you seek your revenge.

I don't even think Ryo is going to be strong enough to defeat Lan Di when their initial confrontation happens (likely in SIII). He's getting more and more powerful in Kung Fu by the day, but he's still not even close to matching Lan Di. That dude owned Iwao, a renowned martial arts master, without even trying. I think Ryo and Lan Di will face off more than once, with Lan Di besting him the first time.

I still have my doubts about that, whether he won because he was better, or because Iwao let him win for whatever reason. Maybe it was something he was supposed to do. Due to the prophecy, maybe. I think this is sort of reflected somewhere in Shenmue, maybe by the hobo, or maybe it was just an idea that I had. #-o

All signs seem to suggest Ryo may not follow through on his quest for revenge - the change of clothing that we know eventually happens may symbolise this (the green attire), plus the change of scenery - it seems to be the classic storytelling device of finding enlightenment, plus the prophecy and what we know of Chi You/the mirrors already makes clear this is more than a simple revenge story.

Disc 4 of S2 gives me good hope that he won't kill Lan Di. I hope he won't. It pains me every time I play Shenmue up to Disc 4 for of S2, seeing Ryo gradually turning into the hate-fueled person he despises.

How is the hate-fueled Ryo any better than Lan Di himself?

On Disc 4, luckily, it seems he begins to realize this.

If so, I don't think it will be through revenge, I think Ryo will eventually see past that. However, it all depends on what Lan Di's intentions are when he uses both mirrors and if it is a matter of Ryo having no other option.
