Shenmue Sign Translation - Help?

Postby BluePink » Tue Jul 21, 2015 11:15 am

Hey Everyone, Just so you don't think i have appeared out of nowhere, I have been using this place for a LONG time, since 2005 IIRC, But lost my account information and the email I used for it a few years back.

Anyway, I'm hoping someone here will be able to help me out, I have been trying my hardest for the last 3 days or so to get a translation* for these signs, The signs are from the Slot House. If anyone can help me I would be eternally grateful :)

* = By translation I mean either what they say in English or even better, the original characters in Japanese.

I only have an extreamly rough "translation" of the first image, the second one I have no clue about.

Yeah, I always wondered this when I was younger, but I came to accept that the slot house is basically a self-contained extension of capsule toy machines with a much higher risk/reward ratio. You can win a variety of prizes (including certificates and little replica cherries, etc.), too.

Then there's the added fact that if you were to exploit the game by getting a big win on the slots, saving your progress and then reverting to your previous save if you lost money, you could make so much money that Ryo could easily afford the pricey trip to Hong Kong, as opposed to the cheap boat ticket, which goes completely against what the story intends. They always could have implemented a system whereby you can win only a certain amount of money from the slots before being barred from using the machines, under the guise that Ryo might be becoming 'addicted', however :-k

Hearing "I can hold your leftover tokens for you" still makes me shudder, though

Because gambling is illegal in Japan. You can't earn money legally by playing games.

Yeah, legally, but that doesn't stop Pachinko's 景品 system to give money to japanese people

That's right, unfortunately. But, "Shenmue" is a game for law-abiding citizens, unlike "Yakuza." ;-)

Funny then how Ryo, as soon as he gets to Hong Kong, he has the opportunity to gamble everywhere and anywhere and does so without hesitation

There's no law in "Shenmue II," even a natural law; see how Ryo communicates with people who speak utterly foreign language without hesitation. ;-)

A textbook example of "I was young and needed the money."
