(Chapter 7 and beyond)

Looking forward to the interview! Although I'd love to know more about III, I think I'd wait for the game, as I already regret watching the spoiler in the Niconico interview. Here are some of my questions (including upvotes for ones already asked):

(Already asked)
- Curious about Shenmue Online, can he talk about how he was asked to make it, how faithful it would have been to the Shenmue story, was he disappointed it was cancelled?
- Japanese audio and English subtitles is a must!
- How far along was SIII was on Dreamcast before being cancelled?
- How does he feel about the supernatural elements of the floating sword and Shenhua's powers contrasting with the realism of the first two games?
- What game (arcade or any other) would he like to make other than Shenmue?

(New questions)
- Has he met Shigeru Miyamoto? What is his opinion of Miyamoto's games?
- What was Zhu Yuanda's relationship like with Iwao? I felt that this was not really discussed at the end of disc 3 of Shenmue II. All we heard was that Zhu was friends with Zhao Sunming, but nothing about Zhu and Iwao.
- Does Yu Suzuki practice martial arts?
- If everything goes well with Shenmue III, how does he foresee IV and V coming along? Can we expect them in 2019 and 2021? Referring to the GDC map, can we assume IV would take place in Xian/Luoyang, and V would be in Mengcun and Beijing? Would we ever see a side story set in Shanghai/Suzhou or Tibet/Xinjiang?

It's a genuine question as I know zip about developing a game like Shenmue. Like you say, the amount of voice output will be very high, but I don't necessarily see that as being the stumbling block, if there is one.

I also would have no issue with importing a Japanese copy, but would you think the subs would have to be added as a mod on PC or do you speak/understand Japanese? Genuinely curious about this.

I am not sure about the feasibility. Don't know anything about developing, which is why I ask myself the question. I do think it's feasible to make a mod for the subtitles. If memory serves me right, there is a fan-made German subtitle mod for S2 and I think even S1. But as the other dude said, it would probably take fans a while to make these.

As for the language thing, I don't understand Japanese but I have beaten both the JAP versions of S1 and S2 many times. If you know the English versions you know what to do and where to go so you don't really need English subs. It's not quite the same experience though, since you don't really understand what's going on. You just know it from before. Now, if you had the option to play it in Japanese with English subtitles, that would of course make it a lot better.

A mod would take a lot of time to produce. A separate edition is definitely possible though. Especially with digital, where they don't have to commit to manufacturing a separate batch of units but just set up a download for those willing to pay for it.

As for file size, yes Shenmue has a lot of audio, but I'm pretty sure that compression and storage have exponentially developed since the first Shenmue was made.

I disagree that everyone can afford to import it from Japan, and those that don't speak and read fluent Japanese but nonetheless prefer the original audio will need English text.

Don't get me wrong, please. If it is feasible, I'd be all for that option. PAL version S2 on DC is my favorite Shenmue game ever. :)

Importing wasn't really that expensive on DC. Just needed a boot disc and then you got the games from Play Asia or some other import specialist. They were pretty much the same price as PAL games were over here, if you were not talking about collector's pieces, special editions and so on. Plus shipping and - if they single out your parcel - customs charges. Play Asia used to offer the ocean freight shipping option which was really cheap. It took a month or two but then again, we've waited 14 years already, didn't we. :)

So if everything comes together, you might have ended up paying like 150% of a regular PAL game's price. Just forgo one other game you wanted to buy and you can easily afford importing Shenmue.

Well, that was what it was like "back in the day". I quit gaming 6 or 7 years ago, so I don't really know what importing is like nowadays.

Congratulation on getting to interview Yu again. \:D/ Here is my question:

- since the Dreamcast allows to transfer savegame files to the Internet and back to your PC, wouldn't it be technically possible to import our datas from previous games into Shenmue III, without necessarily needing that Shenmue I & II HD be released? Wouldn't it be just a matter of writing a piece of code that can read Dreamcast savefile data?

The problem with importing, aside from paying twice for the same game, is that as you say, it's not the same experience if you need to play it with English audio first and then work through the Japanese one from memory because you can't experience it with the original audio the first playthrough.

It would work if they recreated all the objects in the inventory in the new engine and coded a way to put certain recreated items in your inventory according to the save file, but it sounds like a tremendous amount of work, and it's not likely that that many people have savefiles and the means/motivation to access them on a PC. As it stands, I'm guessing they'll give you all the old capsule toys by default, if they decide to include the old collection in the game, and then recreate the mirrors, Ren's coins, Mysterious Scroll, Xiuying's pendant, the photographs and a few other things here and there. It might take too long to recreate every single zippo in addition to all the capsule toys though.

The acquirable technique scrolls from the first 2 games are particularly problematic since the fighting system has been changed, and they may not necessarily be including all the moves that were in the technique scrolls.

Japanese voices are absolutely crucial for me. There is no way I'm going back to the atrocious dub with bored-Ryo. I'm pretty much fluent, so if we don't have the sub option, I will simply get the Japanese version. However, I'd still prefer to have English subtitles just to make sure I don't miss out on any subtleties. But suffering through the dub just isn't worth it.
PAL was lucky enough to get a proper version of Shenmue 2, then you turned around and basically farted on North America with that Xbox dub. Please don't do that again, all Shenmue fans deserve better than that.

And yes it was that bad. Yeah, really really.

Well it seems the Japanese VO with English subs for EU & US players is a big deal to a lot of folks, contrary to what may have been said before. Think enough people have mentioned it to warrant the question being asked. I sent David an email already so hopefully he gets the opportunity. (Cheers David!)

Anybody that "can't suffer through it" is just being pretentious. That is the only fact that is true when discussing the dubs.

Get off of your pathetic pedestal. Stop talking down to anybody that does not prefer and like whatever choices you prefer with regards to what dubbing you play a video game in. It's not that bad.

It is 100% okay that you like one more than the other, but not okay to attack it like Three Blades just did. I prefer the English dub, and I speak fluent English. An English dub is crucial for me. Get over it.

No one is saying (at least I don't think they are), that an English dub shouldn't be included. Just that it would be nice to have an option if possible. And to some people it's important enough to bring it up with Yu, if the opportunity arises. Just like it seems important for you to have an English dub.

- Will the number of musics be as monumental as the previous episodes ?
- Will there be new orchestra musics ?
- Will there be new Sega capsule toys in addition of the original ones ?
- If fans are happy with Shenmue 3, can you promise Shenmue 4 will become a reality ? If yes, how will you estimate this level of happiness ?
- Will we see the real Shenmue 3, the Shenmue from Yu's vision ?
- How long did you work on your Shenmue III prototypes before choosing one for the kickstarter ?
- What are the respective roles of Neilo and YSnet ?
- How many NPCs will be there per locations ?
- Have you plan some travel in China to get your team into the atmosphere ?
- What kind of motion capture are you going to use ?

Thank you so much guys, so many questions, I'll have to work harder than expected hehe.

I am probably going to gather everything until August 15th and will work from there.

Seems like people want to avoid spoilers etc and looking forward japanese voices being added to the game. I will work on this and tell Yu Suzuki that the demand is high and that he should definetly think about it. ;-)

I think it would be fine to include both dubs. But did you even read the comment above you?

I'd be curious to know if/how long Cantonese was considered for Shenmue II back in the day. IGN ran a rumour saying AM2 were scouting in Japan for Cantonese voice actors but then a few months later ran a story with a quote from Suzuki saying the game would be in Japanese.

I have some things I would love to know about.

The first one may have been mentioned.

1. Have you ever made any alterations - big or small - to the full Shenmue story over the years, or has it always remained the same since the beginning?

This second one may not be up to Yu exactly - more the localisation team, I guess - but it would be nice to know which convention the dialogue will follow for consistency.

2. Will Shenmue 3 follow Shenmue 1 or Shenmue 2's naming conventions in the English translation? e.g. in Shenmue 1 it was Chi You Men and Zhu Yuanda; in Shenmue 2 it was Chiyoumen and Yuanda Zhu.

Finally, this one may not be up to Yu - more like SEGA - but it would be nice to know what his thoughts are.

3. With Virtua Fighter characters now appearing in Dead or Alive, and bearing in mind that DOA director Yosuke Hayashi once said his dream character to include would be Ryo Hazuki, would you also like to see Ryo as a playable character in the DOA series?
