Is the Yu Suzuki really living in his office?

Postby SMDzero » Wed Aug 03, 2016 6:28 am

The Ryan Peyton interview suggested that Yu Suzuki is actually living in the office basically working 24/7 to ensure that

A. Shenmue 3 makes it's December 2017 release date
and
B. Shenmue 3 doesn't turn out like Mighty Number 9

I was wondering, it is just Yu Suzuki living at the office or is it also the rest of the team members?

Also maybe we could pitch in to help them out?

What if the Dojo members put some gift baskets together? We could include things like snacks, blankets, toiletries, reading material, basically anything to make living in the office more comfortable.

Thoughts?

It would seem so. Yu and a lot of other staff practically lived at the office during the production of the first games too.

Gift baskets seems a great idea, though I don't know what possibly we could send.

Doesn't sound like it's that uncommon in Japan, I remember Kamiya mentioning he slept at the office towards the end of The Wonderful 101's development.

Isn't it more about Yu's re-ignited passion for creating games, rather than having to sleep at the office to meet the Dec 2017 deadline? That's how I understood it anyway.

The gift basket idea is really cool though!

For reading materials, maybe these would be helpful?

Ehhhh, I think they probably have all the UE4 documentation they need, seeing how they're getting it straight from the source.

It might be worth asking Ryan Payton or Cedric about this, they'd have a better idea of what they actually need than any of us most likely.

Though if they're sleeping at the office, travel neck pillows might be a good idea...

We don't just have to give practical gifts either, we know Yu and the team greatly appreciate the art gifts received, and I assume they greatly boost morale.

Probably, but sometimes you come across tidbits and techniques you never knew you "needed", so it might not be a bad idea to have those laying around the office. Let's not forget a lot of the Shenmue 3 staff have been detached from modern game development for years now.

Where are you getting this from?

Most of the series veterans aren't the rank and file staff who have to put together the game using UE4. Yu said in February that one of the problems they encountered and subsequently solved was finding experts in UE4 in Japan, so clearly they were hiring those rank and file staff based on competency in UE4 as a priority. Realistically speaking, I don't think they wasted time hiring people who weren't adequately proficient in UE4 and would need tutorial textbooks.

Then again, if you want to send them nothing is stopping you. I'm sure they'll be appreciated all the same. I just think they're probably doing fine on the game creation resources front, and could probably use gifts that aid comfort while working those long, unforgiving hours.

I have no idea whom else YS hired behind the scenes, but a look at the resume of those who were revealed to be working on the game shows that they haven't had experience creating a game with modern tech, even Tak Hiriai's last game is Vita rhythm game IIRC, so they might be inexperienced with stuff like Shaders and PBR. But hey, this is just conjecture on my part...

I'm curious about the source of YS hiring Devs with UE4 experience. I remember him saying something along the lines of finding UE4 experienced talent would be hard, but I don't remember him saying he was sucessful in hiring such people.

Edit: I realized I'm taking things way off topic here, so I apologize OP. Spaghetti, if you want to respond, please PM me or post it in the random thoughts thread, I don't want to ruin a thread with such wonderful prospects

Having made the decision to proceed with Shenmue III as a game, we asked if the project had encountered any unusual challenges. Suzuki explained that with his preferred engine Unreal 4 being relatively new, and with little information available in Japanese, it had been difficult to find experts in Japan. "Fortunately, now at our offices we do have skilled experts," he smiled.

I would suggest reaching out to Ryan Payton on Twitter to see if he has any advice on the matter. Perhaps he can suggest what would be best for a situation like this? I'm willing to contribute to some kind of thank you if it's organized in a way that makes sense.

I remember that part specifically about the interview. The angle of the question was actually to try and see if anything funny had happened as it had done so in the past, specifically with the dev member being trapped inside of the R360 cabinet overnight.

However, during the interview when Kenji the translator said "The documentation only exists in English", I raised my eyebrows and could feel tlmy entire face giving off a seriously shocked look. If you watch the video you can just see Yu react immediately to clarify that they had found members who do understand English and can work with Unreal. There was a feeling that a comment like that left as it was would have probably resulted in more bullshit clickbait articles.

Who (with a Twitter handle) would like to step up and ask Ryan? Hopefully he can tell us what the team needs to make living in the office easier and we can divide up the purchases among us and send all the products to a (trustworthy) member and then he/she could bundle the goodies and forward to YsNet's offices in Japan.

Blankets, pillows, razors, shampoo, toothpaste, water, and laundry detergent would be essential. Items like snacks, magazines, even DVDs (like the Hustler) for movie night could be great too!

I am certain that being forced to sleep under their desks every night could ultimately be a strain on Yu Suzuki and the development team and might adversely affect their creative energy for the game... we should strive to make them as comfortable as possible! They would also have a morale boost knowing that the fans are supporting them personally.

How about we pool money together and buy them big fruit baskets. Something to eat while they work?

We can calculate the money into Yen as necessity because so many of us live in different parts of the world. Then we can send the money to someone from the Dojo who lives in Japan like Kiyuu and have them buy the food and send it to Suzuki-san's office.

I was thinking food (and wine because Yu loves wine) because it's something they can enjoy while working and can help them keep the monkey off their back.
