As explained in the PayPal topic:

PayPal support is closed? Whats happening...?

Their SSL certificate, used for website encryption, expired on Friday.

PayPal's API for payments needs to be able to communicate with their end over SSL in order to make a callback to notify their site when a payment is made. PayPal's systems will refuse to talk to a website with an expired or invalid SSL certificate. It will remain broken until they renew their SSL certificate.

Disclaimer: I don't know how they integrate with PayPal, but the certificate being expired is true and it's likely that this was just a timing coincidence. I'm guessing their admin who would do that probably won't take care of it until Monday.

It does provoke nightmarish visions of this happening on the weekend a trailer was actually shown at PSX, and therefore even raises the question of whether it had anything to do with the trailer being held back for another time.

I don't know why you think an expired certificate means they're done. SSL certificates are good for 1 year, this is a normal expiration date. All of the major companies that sell them only sell them in 1 year increments. They did not pick that end date themselves, and if they buy another one it will only last until December 2017.

I had the exact same thought yesterday night.

What if there was actually a Shenmue 3 trailer at PSX ending with the PayPal link? Can you imagine the huge mess and image damage it would have been?
