Re: Corey Marshall (Ryo Hazuki!)

Wow, cool.

What is your opinion on how Ryo's voice turned out? Are there anythings that you would have changed or done differently had you been allowed?

Sometimes, I was told to deliver lines in a way that I thought was a little strange, but those lines ended up being some of the most iconic and repeated lines in the game. The character of Ryo, as we all know, is a young Japanese man who studies martial arts and therefore has a certain stoic, even monotone voice, and that is the way they envisioned his character.

It doesn't always make sense to an American audience but adds that Japanese flavor to the character, even though he is speaking English.

So, I think the director knew exactly what he was doing and it turned out great in the end.

Top 3 scenes [Both games]

This is simply one of the best scenes in gaming for me [the whole of disc 3 was just awesome] with Lan Di appearing and then the little stare down after the fight.

Re: Shenmue Anime

Yes sure it could be let down like Duke Nukem was but atleast we would see how the story was suppose to end like it should have. If Yu isnt on the bar anymore and there would be something prominent mistakes then shame on him.
But if outsider would do anime show about shenmue and do it slipshodly it would be outrage.

Think about it. Which one would displease you more? Outsider ruining the game or Yu accomplish his visions which would sadly fail to reach present standards. (i.e. too much qte etc.)

Though I wouldnt mind anime if Yu would closely control the project.

Extra scene with Fangmei (Disc 3)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHrcR_8vE40

Here is a cut scene with Ryo and Fangmei that I've never seen before until last week. I showed it to both LanDC and Miles Prower, and both were as dumbfounded as me. The only person left who knew about it was our Japanese contributor Kiyuu. She explained to me that this scene is attainable with a high "intimacy level", meaning your scored on all the conversations/scenes you have with Fangmei.

You know there's intimacy level between Ryo and Fangmei, don't you? Intimacy level increases as you talk with her or see relevant events. Every time you have a non-ordinary conversation with her or see some special event, you'll be given intimacy points, such as 20 points for saving her at Man Mo Bistro, 50 points for giving her birthday present, etc. Shenmue II Perfect Guidebook says that good-bye scene will be triggered before you go back to Man Mo Temple to see Xiuing, if you have more than 200 intimacy points. The guide elaborates the far-complicated system.

It's surprising that no one outside Japan has viewed the scene for more than 10 years, when Japanese guides had shown how to trigger it. Anyway, you have noticed the intimacy level has gone up when Fangmei started calling you "Ryo-san," instead of "Hazuki-san," right?

Yes, you should talk to her every day till you get non-ordinary conversations. Some answers which upset Fangmei decrease the points, and the cancellation of those non-ordinary conversations in the middle results in the decrease as well. I don't think you need to get every cutscene with her, but don't miss the major ones.

This Fangmei scene triggers at the end of Disc 3 before you see Xiuying at Man Mo temple. I was able to record a video thanks to a modified save provided by wude .

Re: Your favourite example of attention to detail in Shenmue

I liked that in the second game an NPC might actually answer the door when you knocked on a random one in an apartment complex.

I also really liked how much homework went into studying the martial arts aspect of the game. One of the move scroll store owners in the Thousand White building asks Ryo if Ryo has practiced martial arts. Ryo replies that he has and asks the store owner how he could tell. The store owner says he could tell by the way Ryo shifts his balance when he walks.

A couple of years ago when I was switching martial art schools one of the teachers asked if I had taken martial arts before on my first day there. I said "yeah, how did you know?" The teacher said he knew by the way I shifted my balance when I walked.

Real Life Shenmue Moments

Alright, so its no secret that alot of us are real freaks about Shenmue, I know I am.
But has anyone ever had a Shenmue moment in real life. Say like, when you actually may act like Ryo or say something he does?

I tend to say I see, or is that so? alot, even in Ryo's tone haha. I also have a really bad habit of saying Ahh good whenever I drink something. Its soo bad.

But last week was the best.
I have a friend who's dad owns a local 711 in Trenton NJ, and my friend works there during the night.
I got him to play the Tomato Convience Store song in his 711 just about the whole night.
Video footage coming soon.
Only one person, besides me and him, recognized the song to be from Shenmue and was greatly excited!

Re: Dobuita after Midnight

I know its possible day 1 or something in Shenmue I. If I recall it is when you are looking for sailors and can't find heartbeats maybe.. Or possibly something else triggers it but you actually see the drunk people and even tom going home for the night. pretty cool.

Also it happens automatically at the end of the game when Ryo has to find a way to get to the harbor for a special event that I don't want to spoil if you havent played that far.

Re: If Shenmue HD happens

Personally, I can live without Shenmue III . There, I said it; and, honestly, that's how I have felt for a good few years now. It's not that I've lost all hope in it ever happening - rather, I've just come to realise that I can live my life just fine without it, as much as I still wish for it to happen. Ask me if that was my attitude seven years ago, however, and I'd have tornado kicked you through a wall.

As for the HD collection - that is something that I really want to happen. More than any other game that I'm looking forward to (or even hoping that will be announced, including Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and The Witness , my two most anticipated games of the year), that is the one I want most. The reason why? Well, other than the fact that we'll be able to play Shenmue in beautiful HD (maybe even with uncompressed textures) with all of the accompanying upgrades, it's because a whole new world of gamers will be introduced to it.

Even if they don't do a physical release, think about the numbers: combined, all of the digital marketplaces out there total well over 150 million members (of which probably 70% are still active); granted, only a very small fraction of those people will even consider buying Shenmue , but there's 100% potential there.

The Shenmue HD collection (or each title, if they decide to sell them separately) could easily hit 150,000 sales on XBLA alone, so just imagine how many it'll hit combined with PSN and Steam, etc. The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection has sold over 1.5 million across all platforms as a physical release, with fuck-knows how many digitally. If Minecraft (a game that I'm really not a fan of) can clear five million sales on XBLA, why can't something like Shenmue ? And, who knows, maybe it'll be a massive hit with people.

That, and it really can't be that hard remaster a game, can it? I have no hands-on experience in this field, but if it's simply a case of upgrading the graphics, applying in-game and controller-related upgrades, and the like, that doesn't sound all that horrible. Again, I can't say for sure.

So... yeah.

Did Shenmue have the best music ever?

I'm listening to the soundtrack while playing the first game for the first time in ages, and I'm not sure any game has matched it in terms of the overall feel and quality of its music. There are plenty of games with some amazing soundtracks too (Metroid, Zelda, FF, Sonic, Castlevania, Streets of Rage, etc) but I don't think you can convince me anymore that they have better soundtracks.

Just listen to these...I mean just fucking listen:

Re: Shenmue Timex watch

Have to confess I didn't know that the"expedition" series from timex didn't existed before 1997! And I just called myself an expert. I have always taken for granted that ryo used a watch from the 80's and not from the future? The indiglo light didn't exist at shenmue's time either.

Ah that makes a bit more sense. When you said it was from the 80's I thought that was a surprisingly authentic bit of product placement from Timex. It makes more sense commercially for it to have been a current model I guess, or maybe...time travel will factor into the story of Shenmue 3? Iwao hazuki was a time traveler!!

Re: [Article]Why Shenmue 3 must never be made

Interesting writeup. I can't say that I fully agree with the idea that Shenmue 3 has to be as equally ambitious as the previous Shenmue games. I think what made Shenmue so ambitious among other things was the whole FREE concept. It had such a great sense of exploration and being able to knock on any door though mundane was awesome. These days we have the GTAs and other huge sandbox games that I think Shenmue paved the way for.

Ambition is important but I don't expect to be blown out of the water as far as gameplay is concerned when/if I finally sit down to play Shenmue 3. I really just want an experience that echos the other games with interactivity equaling today's games. Of course there will be those who won't look twice at Shenmue 3 if it doesn't allow you to enter first person mode and mow down Hong Kong with a machine gun(fist), but who cares about them?

And I also see what he's saying about keeping Shenmue unfinished because of the mystery. But I selfishly just don't care about mystery or magic that would remain intact when reminiscing of the first two games. I want to finish the story so badly. If the story had been finished in the first two games and people were crying for some sort of a sequel...No, I wouldn't want more done because the story is intact.

I'm trying to think of other games that were set up to be a series like Shenmue and flowed into each other and were actually finished. Not just sequels with individual stories or whatever.

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

If you have a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yu_Suzuki#Games_Developed

I DON'T see the chart that he showed at the MAGS by himself (on the beamer screen). I'm sure there are other (French) people who have this footage available (just some patience, I'm sure it will be online some time).

I saw some games I wasn't known with. 3 Mobage Town Titles (one of them Shenmue Gai of course).
Maybe I'm wrong (or not), or maybe I wasn't aware of some of Yu's works (at the moment).

It's good to show Yu our support. The main reason I went to Monaco was to shake his hand, and get an autograph by myself on some Shenmue stuff. But another main reason was showing him my support (only to be there in person).
When Yu went to Monaco, no people interested for his autograph, no one interested in his talk, he really give us "the finger" and we will never see Shenmue.

I'm also a bit afraid about it's age. Shenmue 3 without Suzuki, I don't know where that will ending.

Edit: Maybe user: Belgiumfan does have the beamer screens on his Photocam.

Re: GDC manager tweet rumors Shenmue 3 for PS4.

You are as it were, more than correct. I personally continue to respect, honour, and believe in Mr. Suzuki as an immensely talented veteran game designer. As such, if Shenmue 3 did come to fruition on WiiU, I have no doubt that he would be able to incorporate the console's main touch screen tablet controls in a meaningful and appreciated manner for the game.

However, I still want to make the distinction. Whereas touch screen tablet control and motion control are very clearly made evident as the main functionality of the WiiU (ie. I personally like the WiiU and continue to be a passionate veteran Nintendo enthusiast - but it's evident to see that when more than 50% of the WiiU's tablet controller is preoccupied with its touch screen, that there is a certain expectation on both the company/developers side and the gaming audience's side to have a WiiU game necessarily, integrally, and meaningfully involve such related funtionality), a console like the PS4 with its new controller (I cannot mention the new Xbox yet for it would all be conjecture, considering none of us have seen a reveal for it yet), while sporting integrated Move and touch screen funtionality, is designed in such a way (as a traditional dual shock controller) as to suggest that core, traditional cord and controller functionality is still the *main focus* and that surely any Move/touch screen compatibility is purely optional.

Besides, as gaming enthusiasts we should not necessarily be so lenient about developers including 'throw-away' or inconsequential and frivolous motion/touch screen control just because Nintendo seemingly wanted to curry the favour of a core, traditional game developer in Platinum Games to make such a title for their console. After all, as much of a real Nintendo fan as I am, I always cannot help but feel as if Nintendo and their Wii/WiiU has fell short in some way when a particular game on the console plays just as well - if not entirely better - with *just* the conventional no motion control, no touch screen, no nonsense Classic Controller/Pro.

But, I digress. This discussion is purely academic as I would so very dearly easily want to see S3 on WiiU if that could truly be a possibility. As most of us know, there *can be NO console partisanship* when it comes to our hopes for Shenmue 3. That, would surely only be detrimental to our efforts.

Besides, being the eccentric optimist that I claim to be, I just cannot help but think that Mr. Mark Cerny would truly want to extend some kind of opportunity - if one EVER comes - from within his position at Sony to Suzuki if possible, just because of how much he (at least compared to any other industry related celebrity at the moment) seems to be knowledgeable of Suzuki's plight and appreciative of what Shenmue was and is. Cheers.

Re: Realistically, do you think Shenmue 3 will happen?

Hello,

i never blog in fact this is my first ever time, some would say a blogging virgin.

As for the above question will it happen?

Every month or so for the past 10 years I have been asking the same question, like millions of others across the globe. The thing is I believe it can but for it to happen we need to up our game!! This game means so much to me, it was beautiful a stroke of genius some would say. It sucked me into a world i never thought was possible and i have never forgotten. I have been fortunate to have many games consoles and many games over the years but nothing has come close to this series, nothing have i yearned for more than to play the 3rd.

To get Shenmue 3 in development i feel we have to take some steps and take the fight to sega. Firstly if it has not been done already we need an online petition. We need to get millions to sign it that way we could justify to Sega that making the game could be profitable. By doing this we could use the power of facebook. Then each and every Shenmue fan could sign it also we could get non shenmue fans to sign it (play dirty). Everyone who is a fan to send a message to each and everyone of their friends asking if they could also sign it. We could also post the petition on you tube.

Then when we have reached a certain amount of people signed we would go to japan and hand it over to Sega in person. Whilst demonstrating outside with banners and plaques, with a slogan like "what do we want ?" "Shenmue 3" "When do we want it NOW" i know it sounds a little crazy to go all the way to Japan to demand this game, but i would do it. i would buy the ticket and fly all the way from the UK to be there, i know thousands would also join me. We deserve this game people like us made Sega and lets not forget we owe this to Ryo.

I think that Sega has forgotten that someones father died here? We need an explanation, I want to get my hands on that Lan Di and give that Bas***d what for. i also want to drive another fork lift.

So lets get this game rolling lets quit all this will it happen? Wont it happen business and get down to business our selves. We need hand written letters by every fan to be sent to Sega Japan. WE NEED FLYERS, COMMERCIALS, TV SLOTS, WE NEED MONEY!!!

Whos with me to get this show on the road? And to take the fight to sega? if we get enough people like i said i will fly to Japan.

WE CAN DO THIS!!! DONT LOSE THE FAITH!! THIS IS NOT GAMEOVER!! IT IS THE MERE BEGINNING!!

p.s i miss Fuku San.

Re: New Yu Suzuki Interview from MAGS Conferance

The English translation of that line seems a little shitty to me. The 「今セガと話してないですよ」 bit. They wrote "...do not..." when I feel that the proper English representation of that sentence should be "I am not talking with Sega right now."

The former making it seem like they're a boyfriend and girlfriend who broke up, while the latter has more of a connotation just that nothings going on for them to talk about IMO. Just a critique of the nuance.

Also when he's fumbling to find the right words it sounds like he's initially going to say that he's not talking with them yet .

It sounds to me like he still has hope or at least wants to, but just can't find a way to get it done.

Re: Would it be a good idea for Nitnendo to save Shenmue 3?

Well oddly Nintendo is publishing Yakuza HD and a Sonic game.

They also published Ninja Gaiden 3 Razors Edge and Bayonetta 2 and The Last Story,Pandoras Tower,Fatal Frame and a bunch of 3DS games from other devs. Seems they are publishing happy and went on how they want more Japanese games on the system westward.
The thing is most the games they published were either a new IP or followup so at least a semi successful series or better.

Shenmue is neither. The only way is to do what many of us have been wanting. Test the market with HD versions of the Dreamcast games. At the same time being confined to Wii U would hurt that even if Wii U was selling like Hot Cakes. Shenmue HD to test the market needs to go as far as possible. PSN/XBL/E-Shop. I also don;t trust Nintendo to market it well enough. They have this history of even if they publish it, they only put serious marketing into Mario or Zelda.(they even skipped Metroids 25th)

The Nintendo SEGA team up right now is a wet dream for many old school guys for reasons like Sonic. Other than that Nintendo just does not seem the right company to publish Shenmue.

Shenmue 3 and E3 2013

Hey guys,

With E3 being next week and the new consoles being shown off, i believe that this year is Shenmue's greatest chance to make a comeback, either in the form of an HD collection or part 3 as an exclusive.

Unfortunately, if it does not make an appearance (which it most probably wont), i do think that this will be a major nail in the Shenmue coffin.

What do you guys think?

Re: In-Game Ryo vs Promo Ryo

That page is well outdated, as with a lot of he pages on the main site. It stopped being Akira when it changed from Virtua Fighter RPG to Project Berkley, which happened about midway through developing the Saturn version. They referred to the character as Akira as a placeholder name as it was what they were used to. Even Ryo's model in Shenmue is tagged Akira. Saying it wasn't Ryo's like saying Jumpman wasn't Mario.

Re: Have you given up or still hopeful?

There is still hope. Dragon's Crown was supposed to be for Dreamcast and a follow up to the Saturn game Princess Crown and the Arcade game Dungeons & Dragons in the arcades. Sure it's not a direct sequel with a continued storyline but technically in development in 1998 with publishers passing on it or didn't have the money or in ignitions case left the industry. So 15 years of troubled development and this was George Kamitani's baby as much as Shenmue is Yu's plus this was Georges most expensive game he ever made. So there is hope as hopeless situations can have a good turnout, Sure maybe that game is the exception but does not rule out the possibility of Shenmue III even if very very small.

I'm remaking Yokosuka in fancy next-gen 3D.Yes,that's right!

Hello fellow Shenmue-fans.
A lot has happened since I joined the Dojo in 2005, but as far as Shenmue goes, we're still waiting : (. Back in '05, I was just another youth with an unsure future, but my favorite games of all time were, like most f you, the Shenmues (still is, to this day).
Now, almost 10 years later, I'm a professional 3D-artist, working in the video game industry. Fate, right? Anyways, since Yu and the Boys (and Nagoshi, and the Yakuza-guys) can't seem to do neither a remake of Shenmue I&II, nor shenmue III I've decided to take it upon myself to recreate the whole of Shenmue I in 3D, so everything's done for them the day they decide t actually do a remake! Handy right? : D

I posted this thread almost 2½ years ago, some of you might remember that, it was my intention back then to start this project, but work, life, and everything else came between. Now however, I've got a solid job, many interesting sideprojects running, and a lot of time to kill during the weekends! So, thus, the saga begins ;)

Hope y'all like this!
Every model is 100% custom made from scratch , no Shenmue-assets used at all, every texture is custom made, every painting and kanji based on screenshot/photos of my TV, which I've then painted on for maximum accuracy! It's not much.. yet, but it's something!

Everything's default rendered in the fancy Unreal engine atm, which I'm not yet really familiar with.. but I will be! : D

(I think it all looks kinda crap atm , the light is off and so on,but bear with me, I'll learn as I go and I'll see this through : ) )

http://imageshack.us/a/img694/6946/4qmd.jpg
The Dojo, for Shenmue Dojo! : D Lacking a roof atm.. working on that!
http://imageshack.us/a/img821/5779/ec9w.jpg
Gonna light the candles later too!
http://imageshack.us/a/img834/4632/ytat.jpg
All the scrolls and stuff are based on the game's! Still missing the sword-box, working on it!
http://imageshack.us/a/img580/2827/nshg.jpg
The door, with a red-brown inside, and dark brown outside, just like in the game : D

Really happy with how that hose and bucket turned out : D

The garden lantern! I added some kanjis, anyone recognise them? : ) I try to stay as true to the original look as possible, while adding "logical" details that current gen tech can handle but the DC could not : )

Some bushes and stuff, all very WIP! Note that the fence is now modelled, and not a polygon plane lik in the game ;P
As John Hammond said in jurasic park.. Spared no expense!

I'm working on this a bit every weekend, and sometimes during the wekdays. I'm fulltime employed at Paradox Interactive, and I spend a lot of my freetime developing games for iOS and such, so time is kinda slim but, as you can see, I'm getting somewhere! : D I'll update this thread every now and then when I get the time : D

And I'll see this project through! Probably before Shenmue 3 is released, anyway! xD

Also, thanks to Ziming who posted a lot of Shenmue screens last time I asked for them, without them, I'd have a really hard time creating all this in 3D (I do look in-game a LOT but, some things you just cannot get a good view of xD)

Also, last but not least, I'm ALWAYS in need of good reference material . If anyone got texture packs (i don't use the, but I look at them : )), hi-res screen, screens of weird angles (like, a skyview om Hazuki residence and such) it would be REALLY helpful to get my hand on these : )

Re: Support Shenmue in a big German poll

How about I ask the members of my forum to crush Shenmue in the next round? Wouldn't you all like that? With more than 1.5 million registered users and me being one of the main staff there, it shouldn't be a problem to get at least a few thousand votes against Shenmue. Not funny? Exactly!
...
Else I will rally some people from my forum to vote.... and we wont have to cheat to beat you!

Re: Is there something wrong with Ryo?

Oh, another one of these...

I don't know why people always expect Ryo to hit on every chick that there is. Yeah it's actually the chicks that do the move but seriously, does he have to take all the offers? I find Ryo to be a much more likeable and "realistic" character then the stereotypical macho hero you get in every second game.

Ryo's father died and he has left his home for a foreign country at still pretty young age. He's distant and distrustful for a reason. Also, he might just still have his heart settled down for Nozomi, despite not showing it and keeps somewhat of an honor when it comes to girls. Then you could even consider his bad memories with girls. I sadly don't know where this came from but supposedly the fight with "that boy you fought with" was because of Ryo showing interest in a girl and the other boy mocking him for that. That could've affected his behavior early on.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

Just found out today off somebody that the lead programmer for Shenmue and systems designer for Shenmue 2, Tak Hirai (also worked on Space Channel 5 as lead programmer) was the project lead on this game, just thought people might want to know what this incredible member of the Shenmue team (one of SEGA's best programmers, ever?) is up to these days

Re: Anyone else feel this way?

Shenmue 2 is the best shenmue i have completed it 14 plus times
nope shenmue gai is the best shenmue
Make that Shenmue Online. Pre- Yu Suzuki involvement.

Or more seriously, after Shenmue 1 and 2 I would like to give honorable mentions to Shenmue Zero and Shenmue : The Boat. Their creators at least cared enough about the series to try and make something while fans wait for an official continuation. According to their resources of course. Actually, they even got Gai beat by having worldwide releases.
