Hi, I am just crazy and I can't stop getting involved in new things.

Right now I need help to test Shenmue II on Xbox, this is a quick and dirt attempt to make the game run Widescreen and/or at 720, hex editing the default.xbe.

I need people with a softmoded Xbox, an HDTV cable and if possible, an upgraded ram Xbox.

The goal is mainly to achieve propper widescreen support, 720p is a plus.

My setup is somehow a mess ( Xbox v1.6....) so my console hangs at the first loading screen. I could be either bad video config on my end or just that the Xbox ran out of ram, so that's why I ask for upgraded ram xbox to test, anyway anyone can test and post their results.

Just drag and drop the default xbe on the root of the game and overwrite, remember to make a backup of your original .xbe just in case.

Things to note, the Hud is not scaled just stretched, other thing to know is that, in the same fashion as the Dreamcast version emulated with the Widescreen hack on NullDC, geometry outside the 4:3 will start to disappear, but in a slightly different way, for instance, if Ryo's hand/arm goes out the 4:3 on Dreamcast, his arm and hand will disappear, on the Xbox, only if the full character is out of the 4:3 area will disappear, so the effect is less distracting.

The images above are a good example, the characters outside the 4:3 area are still "complete" and not "broken" as it would on the emulated DC version, also the extra FOV is awesome!!!!


I must thank MarvelousMirth I was failing miserably trying to change the aspect ratio, without him this couldn't be possible.

Next thing I want to do is increase a bit the internal resolution, from 640x480 to 720x480, the game shouldn't perform any worse and we could gain a bit of sharpness.

My brother wants to sell me a xbox. So since it is my brother, how much should I pay him for it? I can't afford too much. It is a stock Xbox, so I would have to mod it without games that could do it like 007?

I wouldn't pay more than 60€ for it.

About softmodding the console, I have no idea, a friend of mine installed the chip for me.

He will never get the recognition he deserves, just because most of his compositions are focused on the videogame industry, it is as sad as it sounds...

My fave compositions from him are To Zanarkand (FFX) A Return Indeed (LO) and most of the Blue Dragon Soundtrack.
He was my inspiration to start learning piano on my own, I did this ( A return indeed) cover some time ago, I love that song.

Yesterday I dreamed about Shenmue 3 :rotflmao: :roflmao: It was about that tech demo that Cedric tweeted about.

It started with a snowy place, showing the new weather engine, there were rabbits deers and other animals there, then the camera panned out, a lot of flowers in blossom and petals started to fly around the sky, in a beautiful manner, and suddenly it changed to a beautiful spring with green mountains and hills plenty of life.

A figure appeared from the distance, it was Shenhua, she was walking around the environment, she seemed very happy and plenty of life too, her outfit was different but similar to her traditional one, she was wearing a hat and had longer hair than before ( I know it makes no sense, but I don't have control over my dreams xD)
While she was walking she meet Ryo, our Ryo, it was the CG Ryo xD, and then when everything was getting interesting I woke up T_T

In my dream Shenhua's dress was gorgeous, I am not very good at drawing, but I tried to make a sketch of the basics.

Hi! I am not very active in this topic, and I should.

I am still working on remaking some characters, since I've learned A LOT, since I started this journey with Shensun.

So I'll post the current State of Shenfua's model it has been remodeled almost completely!, I'll have to render the portratis again :rotflmao:

Nice! Are you using a 1080p upscaler as well or a simple VGA to HDMI adapter with that?

Ok, I will give a little brief of how I did achieved widescreen on Shenmue II with virtually no clipping at all.
First off I must say that it come with its own tradeoffs, I will explain them later.

Ok, so I took a different approach to make Shenmue II widescreen, instead of changing the 3d matrix, to expand the horizontal view I did the opposite, I changed it to expand the vertical view, in orther to achieve widescreen without cropping the image top/bottom, I used the camera zoom value to put the camera further away, since the game renders everything "inside" the zoom camera area the end result is the game running in widescreen with zero clipping.

Top original widescreen hack, bottom new one, notice how now everything is rendered on the right and left of the image.

Ok now the tradeoffs.

Cutscenes are not affected by the ingame zoom value, so the end result, while widescreen, is cropping the top and bottom of the image, I've been looking for a similar value for cutscenes with no luck so far. Anyway we can remove the black bars in orther to have the whole screen filled with the cutscene so givin us the same widescreen as the standard game but without those awefull bb, again, bad news, it seems that removing the BB requieres specific values for cutscenes, since the game does not use an universal addres for the BB.

So the game will display cutscenes like the top righ image.

Another tradeoff is that the game will lag more on Dreamcast since it is actually rendering quite a bit more geometry than with the previous hack.
So this will come in handy for those tha want to replay the game in widescreen with no clipping.

Since characters no longer clip aoutside the 4x3 area I would recomend using the autofixer for Shenmue I, for Shenmue 2 there is no such a problem, the game won't clip (the hack behaves differently/better on real hardware though)

Someone refresh my memory, did Shenhua's house had electricity in Shenmue 2?

That's something that got my attention when I was ripping shenmue II geometry, it looks like it has 2 bulb lamps outside, while the interior lamps do work with oil (or something else xD)

Getting better rips and manipulating the camera in Shenmue 2

I've been asked how can I manipulate the ingame camera on Shenmue II, well since this is very usefull to rip game assets I will post it here so everyone can use it.

First you will need this cheat engine table, nulldc, 3D RIPPERDX and patience.

As many of you may know it is difficult to rip Shnemue II's assets since you can only rip what's inside the game's fov, everything else will be clipped, so to rip a full scene could take you up to 10+ rips and hours of headache.... so manipulating some memory addresses you can change that, it means you can rip bigger chunks of assets, (or play the game like an old GTA game xD) this is extremely usefull since there is no geometry extractor for Shenmue 2.

Let's get to work.

Make sure You have the latest version of Cheat engine, and you have the cheatengine table I've provided you.

Run Cheat engine, load the cheat engine table, Run NullDc, attatch Cheat engine to NullDc.

Load Shenmue II you should see the game as usual.

Change the field of view value to something like 52aa2aaa (you can try different values)

Now change the "perpendicular address" to 0000C000 this will prevent the rip to have the Z axis distorted and you will get a better view of what you are going to rip.

Ok now put the camera as far away as you want by changing the address (camera up) to your desired value.

Chek if everything you whant to rip is in place.

Import it to 3ds max and enjoy your "almost" perfect rip.

It is possible to make original Xbox games run at native 720p on the console, in fact this has been done already.

But the compatibility rate is not that high, basically in many games the console will run aout of ram, if you have a 128 ram xbox you will have higher rate of succes, Shenmue II believe it or not, is very ram hungry even on an Xbox so it will hang at the first loading screen, if you have a 128mb ram xbox youu could try it and report the results.

With all the resolution debate madness lately and the 4k debate....

PS4 neither Xbox One shouldn't struggle to run a direct port of Shenmue I & II at 4k, Sega should tweak some world and hud textures and make it widescreen, do a direct port, advertise it as first 4k console game ever.

Does not look better than my average Psx game, don't know why it is releasing on an inferior platform, Metal Gear Solid looks miles better, imagin Shengmu running on the mighty Psx, that would be like real life grafix.

His next video should be recorded using Reshade (SSAO, GI, DOF, Lens flare, bloom) when do it right it gives the game a new dimension, almost like playing a remaster.

I've been mession around with it an the Screen Space ambient occlusion alone makes the game 100% more beautiful.

Notice the contact soft shadows that Ryo ( and everything actually) casts to the environment.
